Carpocalypse 2 Manic Monday
#1
So almost got wiped out by someone pulling out of Pohaku into the right lane.
New traffic pattern on a rainy day and not a cop to be seen

I don't know, it worked really well this morning for me. Shaved a few minutes off my drive to Hilo.

Is the plan to make it 4 lanes eventually or is the contra flow a long term thing?

is the contra flow a long term thing

I believe the contraflow is a workaround for the "no money to widen the highway" problem, because we were supposed to have 4 lanes by now.

Meanwhile lower Puna keeps growing....

Had an opportunity to witness the aggressiveness of the folks turning left from Pohaku onto 130, Hilo bound. Those folks seem to have total disregard for the folks turning rt on to 130 from Shower, on the same light change...could be those folks do not realize that Shower has a green lite at the same time...there is only 1 lane

There is some comfort for the patient. When the light turns red for Pohaku/Shower, the light turns green arrow for the left turn off 130 onto Shower... the length of time allotted for left off 130 onto Shower is now available for the right onto 130 from Shower...patience

Closing off the free right "relief valve" was successful in allowing people from beyond HPP to get through the area faster by staying on 130 because the HPP route is now slower.

Downside #1 is the long line of cars on Shower that now have to wait for the light to turn right. I wouldn't mind hearing from somebody who experiences it how bad it really is.

Downside #2 is the people you speak of making a left from Pohaku. The right turn and thru traffic from Shower has the right of way, so people coming out of Pohaku have to wait through a full cycle to turn left, and have to wait in the intersection until the shower people are done, which happens when the light turns red. I can imagine those folks sitting on Pohaku behind a long line of cars getting a bit frustrated by watching 1 or 2 cars per cycle get through. And backtracking to Pohaku Place is no longer an option either.

Incredibly bad plan. I'm fortunate to be able to avoid it.

I hope it gets corrected before someone gets killed.

Kaloli is moving, but a bit demo derby

: coming back past it at 7:15 it’s backed up past paradise. People are turning into what should be the left lane and not using the shoulder lane until till come at 29th.
Need to be cones at kaloli like there were at shower last week. The striping is confusing

And cars are still coming out 29th jamming things up

Did anyone else notice that the "re-striping" included an upgrade from the temporary stripes? Almost as if they delayed that work because this project was planned well before they told anyone.

The moral of the new story is --- if you are still using shower drive to get to HWY 130, you are just not willing to accept the new reality that the contra flow from Kaloli is actually working quite good. May your wait for the shower drive stoplight be a pleasant one.

My question would be: Will the contra-flow from Kaloli still work "quite good" when all the cars that are backed up at Shower suddenly appear in the line waiting to get on the hwy at Kaloli?
