padlock that uses your car key

Has anybody ever used one of these padlocks in Hawaii? The price is steep for what looks like a cheap lock and I was wondering if they hold up in our weather. The lock "learns" your car key so you don't need to add another key to your ring for locking your gate. Other manufacturers also make ones that do the same with your house key.

Pull up to gate, take key out of ignition, open gate, restart car, proceed?

The only way I get any locks to last here is to oil them periodically...

Just curious as to why you would want this set up ?

I've always kept my gate key on a separate ring that I keep in my truck. That way I save lots of wear on my starter and battery by not having to re-start after opening the gate either coming or going. I also keep my mailbox key on the gate key ring, also to save wear on the starter/battery.

Seems foreign to me to get out of car with engine running and key in ignition. That's how cars get stolen, a known tactic in Puna.

Considering proximity of car to gate this doesn't seem like a big concern to me. Someone would have to be lurking in the brush within a handful of feet at my place, or come charging out from other side of road like a bat out of hell. Geezus!

It happened to someone within the last year in our neighborhood, except instead of letting his car get stolen he fought the thief and won.
