My house in Orchardland came with an orchard, that, mostly, I do not want. There are 8 rows of trees, each row about 75 feet with 6 or 8 trees in each row, varying in height from about 4 to 7 feet. The trees are mostly from the Pacific Northwest, and all require a winter frost to produce. All they do is get covered in weeds and brush and never produce. Does anyone have a recommendation of someone with equipment who can solve my problem without the need for a second mortgage?

Where is Orchardland ? Do you by chance mean Orchidland ?
A lot depends on the diameter of the tree trunks, and the amount of root systems. Someone with a chainsaw could possibly down the trees for removal or composting, and then stump killer painted on would prevent regrowth.

I wonder how many times I misspell Orchidland when thinking about the orchard. Anyway, I found a guy who is going to do exactly that, cut the trees at the base, chip them and move the chips to an area that needs rebuilding, and then mow down all the weeds that have grown up. I did not know about stump killer, and will add that to the project. Mahalo.

cut down the trees and plant useful ones.

Just be sure to have the guy use potassium nitrite to kill the stumps. This will not poison the soil like kerosene or some kind of fuel oil will.

I recall weather man Willard Scott asserting that deciduous trees react solely to sunlight exposure not anything to do with temperature. That's what he said anyway.

If you don't mind sharing, who did you hire / how much do they charge?

The trees that I cut were things like apple, pear, peach, all trees that had labels requiring at least 120 hours under 40 degrees. The fruit they produced, if anything grew was small and terribly unhealthy looking. It's hard to say what it cost, because after he showed up with 2 other people, the most humongous chipper I have ever seen, an excavator and other machinery, I had him do other things. He cut down my rod infested Ohia, Chipped the 100 trees he removed, used the chips to fill in low spots and rocks essentially adding useable space to the yard, and lots of cleanup. The bill was close to 2K. Expensive, but worth it. That said, I still have some Ohio that he cut. If anyone needs firewood in Orchidland, come and get it.

I wonder if my interpretation of what Willard Scott was right? The context was the appearance of the cherry blossoms in April.
So did the leaves drop off and reappear yearly?
