Yes, the protestors have been doing this for decades, but they keep setting up their protest parades and sit-in camps at the SYMPTOM of their issue, NEVER the cause.

As one might expect, this has gotten them exactly nowhere, while costing everyone else plenty. To some extent I agree with their extortion -- their anger is justified, if misdirected.

Uncle Robert's is actually a much more effective Hawaiian protest camp that I think is far more aligned with traditional Hawaiian values. The whole front bar area more than qualifies as a traditional Hawaiian artwork which just happens to include traditional Hawaiian cultural practices. They do not demand their sovereignty, instead they simply practice it daily as a lifestyle.

Hard to protest the true causes without a time machine. Then they'd have to decide how far back to go. The terrible mismanagement and infighting of the kingdom that led to the disbanding of the Hawaiian military and the bayonet constitution? The great mahele that essentially allowed the ali'i to steal much of the common kanaka's land? The ali'i that sold land, or intermarried, or otherwise allowed others to legally acquire land? Kamehameha illegally overthrowing and taking life and land from the other islands? The Tahitians invading the original Hawaiians and taking the islands for themselves?

Trash left behind doesn't surprise me. The protesters are (hopefully were) pawns in a money grab, doesn't take much to work up the angry entitled, attention starved and unemployed. Obviously Kim and Ige have some part in it given they both ignored a supreme court decision. We know OHA financed it and I assume orchestrated it as well. Are they the sole money grabbers in this charade? IDK.

I believe it goes: OHA already embezzled the money, and it was cheaper-easier to stoke the protests with funding as a distract-deflect-delay tactic while they stonewalled the audit.

I'm starting to wonder if this is the first time this has happened. Really an unfortunate waste of a protest camp, they should have set up at the OHA offices, the State capitol, etc., instead of Walmart, the wind farm, Mauna Kea, etc.

The observatories stopped summit operations for about three weeks starting mid-July due to safety concerns. There was no guarantee people at the summit would be able to evacuate in an emergency and similarly no guarantee we could get staff to the mountain in case of a major failure at one of the observatories. This was well-documented at the time and made public. It was not a willing shut-down, it was one borne of necessity.

Observatory staff, the minority of whom are astronomers, remained employed during that time and re-assigned to other tasks. In the meantime, all the manua Kea tour companies had to shut down and lay off their staff, and local contractors on the island were left out of work due to the road being blocked.
