I am having the worst time trying to find a job. Pele is sure putting me to the test. I have been everywhere (ALL the temp agencies, workforce development, HireNet) and applied everywhere and keep getting told that they would hire the local person before they'd hire me. Anyone know of anyone looking for an intelligent hardworking haole that knows her way around the office in Hilo? I'm out of money so I can't drive around looking for work anymore. Oh and also I am selling a
2002 Jeep Wrangler that is in the classified section that I need to desperately get rid of. Email for pics. Mahalo

Please tell me that you are kidding and they REALLY didn't come right out and say that they would hire a local before you just because your were a haole.

No not because I'm a haole. What I meant by local was someone living here for awhile with a job history on the islands. I have no job history on the island.

I"m not sure what kind of experience you have but have you tried Hilo Medical Center. You dont have to have medical training for some of the clerical jobs and work experience counts a lot.And then keep going until they hire you. Check with them every week also their web site has job openings at hhsc.org Good luck

Why would "non-local" work experience and references not count? Those things can be checked by phone or fax easily. While it may not be racial, it sounds like discrimination against newcomers IMHO.

That proves, what I thought, that the locals stick together.

actually i think it's kind of funny, haole's complaining about discrimination, however i have a few friends who have lived here for many years and they have verified that it happened to them. the best thing to do is just laugh it off, imho.

Perhaps these employers are considering the fact that a lot of mainlanders who move here with good intentions often leave after they realize that they're not going to find what they were looking for. Some local references might indicate that they intend to stay. Just my 2 cents. And Easygoing, that's just not necessary. IMHO.
