Puna Kai ... maybe in 2020?

hmmm. I wonder what will happen to two left turn lanes that go nowhere.
Assume the best and ask questions.

If you look at the county maps, those lead to where there would be driveways for those two properties.
Doesn't make sense to have them but it's Hawaii County.

Most places on island with high traffic would put up a sign:
No Left Turn

not provide a personal left turn lane. When I looked into setting up a business the County told me I needed to provide a turn lane, and I needed to pay for it.

Making the project more expensive is perfectly sensible.

That's exactly what the county did with Puna Kai.

They made them widen the road and include a turn lane. The turn lane leads to Puna Kai if you are going the other way.
They also had to install a bus lane and shelter and the traffic lights.

It is the only shopping center I have ever seen with gates around all of the entrances - that appear to be permanent.

I suspect they will close and lock them at night to keep the local homeless out. When I drove by on Sunday someone was camped in the bus stop shelter.

The Puna Kai web site says that Goodwill will be open on March 28. The newsletter says March 14. So I'd go with the 28th. It puts the "Grand Opening" in April.

Drove around Puna Kai yesterday. They have banners hanging from all the stores saying what they are.

Goodwill is stocked and ready to open.

Really looking forward to shopping somewhere else than Hilo.
