Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here)
I found this approach for masks in Japan - in case anyone is interested in other countries take on masks.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Coronavirus/com...n_highway/

edited for description of link - basically, Japan says wear masks when outdoors, among other common sense tips like washing hands and sneezing into a tissue.

Digging some of the science nuggets out of the reddit thread.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2440799/
"Any type of general mask use is likely to decrease viral exposure and infection risk on a population level, in spite of imperfect fit and imperfect adherence, personal respirators providing most protection. Masks worn by patients may not offer as great a degree of protection against aerosol transmission."

Do masks help - of course, that's why healthcare workers use them. Should they be wasted by millions of individuals to provide themselves with a false sense of immunity while trying to maintain their normal routines - of course not. Seems like rational common sense?

Normalcy bias does have consequences. It seems Punatics should have plenty of practice learning how to go with the flow, because the times, they are a changing.

To be clear... every single mask, whether a surgical mask, a dust mask, a N95 or whatever mask, all work, to varying degrees, more than no mask at all.

The point is to filter out droplets of moisture, saliva, that carry the virus. The droplets come in all sorts of sizes. Some will fall out of the air at a short distance from the source. A foot or two. Some, smaller, will travel further. Some will get through a light weight mask and some will not. There is no magic line. there is no consistency at all.

Gloves, masks, zinc, vitamins, hand sanitizers all have a place, and all, if nothing else, can give their user a bit more protection than without. For other's to criticize you for your choices is more evidence of their shortcomings than yours.

As terracore has pointed out. Politician's motives are not your safety, but rather some version of crowd control. They make statements based upon their ideas of what serve their agenda the best. Not yours. And let's be clear, at this point, after three years of the Trump administrations endless stream of lies, there is no reason to believe a word they say.

Do what makes you, personally, feel better. Safer. Read, watch, listen, and make choices based on your assessments. Consult those you trust. Remain calm.

A Halloween mask would reduce exposure if or for no other reason it prevents you from touching your face.

Passengers on the cruise ship that was here the other day are reportedly showing symptoms and isn't currently allowed to dock in California.

To be clear... I agree Smile The linked study even considered home-made tea-cloth masks and demonstrated that they do provide about twice the protection compared to no mask, and compared to surgical masks (~4x protection) and N95+ respirators (~100x protection).

However, my point is that no mask is perfect so trying to don a mask and then go about all your usual daily routines in public is still running the (reduced) risk of infection or transmission. Social distancing means minimizing all non-essential public interactions although using a mask of any sort during essential public activities would help. That's part of the "delay" phase of response to slow the number of infections and allow the healthcare system to better cope.

We apparently also have another cruise ship (Westerdam) passing through that was denied entry at other ports in Asia. Be interesting to see how the DOH handles any testing for its crew (some of its passengers tested positive after disembarking in Cambodia)

How did I miss that? A cruise ship was in Hilo on saturday? They got off the ship to go around town? Seriously? The world is on the verge of a global pandemic and people are cruising around in floating petri dishes disembarking from shore to shore. Either I am overly cautious or thousands of passengers and our local and state government officials are reckless.

Thanks terracore for explaining it better than I can.

Does having a mask increase your survival rate? Sure. Does it decrease everyone else's? Also. But which you prefer says a lot about a person.

Seems islandlving is still hurting because I laughed at his ridiculous conspiracy theory. I hope the day comes when people will be held to account for spreading harmful lies. I have no idea what you're talking about with criminals and clothes? Maybe when I warned about door-to-door salesmen and you demanded to know the color of their underwear? As I said, my trip to Asia was postponed and not by me. So instead I went somewhere else and I've already booked my next trip. Looking forward to those half-empty planes.

As for hokole/glinda/dakine or whatever pseudonym you're cowering behind now, sorry don't care what you think.

Westerdam: nobody on board had the corona virus so what's the problem if it comes here?

A passenger on the Westerdam tested positive after disembarking. Its crew had contact with this individual and the ship will now pass through Hawaii. This should sound familiar (although what interactions the crew will have while in port is currently unclear)

Well it is on the cover of HTH, WHT, SA, and part of the County Civil Defense message yesterday. Can't fault anyone for hunkering down currently, but keeping an eye on news from the outside world might be helpful? Wink

Just greedy. EIther they get tourist dollars, or they get emergency dollars. Win-win (for them).
