I don't see the logic to police checkpoints. If you're driving to some location, without contact with any people, it seems being isolated and contained within your car is as good as being isolated at home. It's certainly better than jogging on the side of the road, exhaling heavily. Being stopped by the cops is just another human to human contact, with risk of transmission. Cops would have to interrogate you about your intentions and destination, none of which you would have legal obligation to respond to.

Only checkpoints I've heard about have been on Kauai. Friendly reminders and an excuse to check for drunkenness, perhaps?

the logic to police checkpoints...

I think the presence of the police on the streets could serve us very well. They could be as simple as cruisers occupying speed traps and ramped up to a more in your face kind of stops as the situation warrants.

If nothing else they enforce the seriousness of the situation. And if people show any sign of not respecting the lock down order could be expanded to limit people to routes needed to serve their immediate needs.

But initially, they reinforce the seriousness of the situation and allow the police to be in touch with the truths as they are playing out on the streets.

And, of course, anyone moving around with malicious intent can be easily identified and dealt with.
