We had a very effective workday on Nov. 30th. Two of the small medians were weeded and plantings added, and the long narrow median to the south/Kapoho side was planted with large walking iris. A nice thing about these iris is that they all bloom on the same day, making for quite a display. And they are fragrant. There is still room in that median for more plants, which we will install in December.
Due to the holidays we are only scheduling one group workday this month: Saturday, Dec. 14 from 9 am to noon.
You are all invited to turn out and help beautify the entrance to Pahoa and Puna Makai, by tending our community garden at the Pahoa Roundabout. Consider your volunteering your Xmas present to Pahoa.
Question? post it here.

It's been a while since I posted any updates. First, we had a lot of rain which caused us to cancel several work days.
Then I got sick, and I still am, so I am in no shape right now to oversee new plantings, although I do have ti and bromeliads that have been donated.
If anyone has energy, weeding always needs to be done and will vastly enhance the area. I can provide trash bags and safety vests if you give me some advance notice. A BIG MAHALO TO VOLUNTEERS!

Very sorry to hear this news. Renee will be missed and left an impact on Puna.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Very sad to hear of her passing. She was always striving to make Pahoa better.
Is there anyone who is now co-ordinating the care of the round-about plantings ? Is there is a workday to weed/fertilizie ? I had donated plants but was unable to to participate in previous workdays, but would like to keep her project going. I can donate plants and fertilizer, but cannot go out in mid-day sun because of skin cancer issues.

Coming into Pahoa from Hilo side of the roundabout, a bush has been placed in a really bad spot for folks to be able to see around. As you come up to the yield sign, you look to the left (about 10 o'clock position) and the damned bush is in the way of the view of the oncoming traffic. A scooter or motorcycle can easily be hidden from sight.

There is now a sign as you enter the Pahoa roundabout:

I drove through the Rene Siracusa Pahoa Roundabout.
The plants are gone, replaced with more concrete.
They paved paradise and now look what we've got.

They ripped everything out, then replaced some of the areas with plants again. Trouble is, they planted stuff that is real tall in areas that block the view of traffic as you enter the circle. They planted lower stuff in areas where it wouldn't have mattered about the height... ???
