Home and auto insurance
#1
Good morning. I am again asking for your input and recommendations for homeowners insurance and car insurance. My current provider will not cover anything in Hawaii. Go figure. My current insurance company said they would happily refer me to a company, but I would rather hear from the people who are using and paying for their coverage.

Thanks again

Ever stop to think and forget to start again?

Where will the house be? If it is in Lava Zone 1 or 2, it matters as to who you may be able to get coverage through.

We are looking along the Hwy 11 corridor. Everything will be in Lava Zone 3.

Thanks again

Allstate works for me for both home and auto. They were out in force the day after Tropical storm Iselle hit here in 2015 writing checks for wind damage to homes. And Allstate paid for SUV repair when a rat chewed spark plug cables. Their rates are about the same as any other insurance company in the area.

I have State Farm in Honolulu. I've never had a homeowner claim, but had some bad luck of late and have had 2 auto accidents in the last 3 months, one my fault and one uninsured motorist to the tune of about 10K. They were easy to work with for both. The reason I did not use a local State Farm agent was that the mortgage company required separate hurricane insurance and the local State Farm agent would only use State Farm hurricane insurance, wheras the guy in Honolulu shopped around and saved me several hundred dollars.

I also have State Farm insurance for both home and auto.  Never had any claim on my home but had minor car accidents, my fault,  three times in less than three years.  They were always quick and easy to work with.

Robert Shimabuku is my agent and their office is in Keaau.

We use USAA for auto coverage and Dongbu for home.

When I last shopped years ago Dongbu and Liberty Mutual were within a few dollars of each other.

The reason why we have separate insurers is because USAA hurricane insurance is very high making their quote not even in the ballpark of competitive.

Our lender (Wells Fargo) requires us to have hurricane insurance even though we are nowhere near the water.

It is possible to get homeowners through one company and then hurricane through another.

"Allstate paid for SUV repair when a rat chewed spark plug cables"

You have no deductible, or they don't require a deductible on rat chewing? A rat chewed through our wires too and it never even dawned on me to make an insurance claim. The cables were like $30 and our deductible is $500.

Our deductible is $250. Evidently the Ford escapes spark plug cables were only about $100.00 total. It cost $400.00 in labor to get to them according to Orchid Isle Ford.

Ouch. I'm glad I took auto shop in high school. The cables take less than 10 minutes to install. Probably less than 5 if one has done them before.

Also, the $100 cables would have been $20-$40 at Pahoa auto parts. Open 7 daze.

A note to terracore: I also have USAA for my auto insurance, and for my home. I know your posts are usually spot on, but I wanted to let you know a good reason why I kept the USAA for my home instead of going with another less expensive company policy. I realize that everyone's situation is different, but after the 2014 eruption, I shopped around, and it turns out that costs really do reflect what is covered. My basic policy coverage includes the cost of removal of debris of my damaged home ( a biggie in case of hurricane, earthquake or fire), and rental costs for 12 months while home is being rebuilt, something the less expensive policies did not cover.
