As someone said upstream in this thread, HIHS probably got tired of the county's politics and being jerked around. Like most of you, I have almost no faith that the hippie dippy "Rainbow" approach will work. I hope I'm wrong, but they'll probably spend all the money the county gives them on housing and feeding the limitless supply of new unwanted animals instead of the spay and neuter efforts that might reduce those numbers.

Ultimately, it comes down to culture, both in the usual sense and in the political sense. Someone may accuse me of being racist, but I don't care and will say this anyway: A significant part of the "local" culture does not place a high value the humane treatment of animals. Just look around you at all the dogs on five foot tethers and all the cockfighting. It is an unpleasant fact. Making things worse, we have a political culture that is afraid to confront problems head on and make difficult decisions. Inconceivable as it may seem, things are about to get even worse.

Sure, I’ll join in.  Hawaii is a melting pot, with many cultures and traditions represented here. The cultural heritage of some past and recent immigrants, and remember, we’ve seen repeatedly that culture and heritage is a factor which outweighs almost everything else, some immigrant families quietly retain customs and practices that include cat & dog cuisine. Remove the stigma. It would reduce food imports. It’s good for the environment. It could be a part of the solution.

According to social media interactions the group is largely ran and supported by vegans and vegetarians and... the group... might focus their enforcement authority on food producers instead of feral and dangerous animals.

I’m a vegetarian & if Rainbow Rangers have any impact on Big Island ranchers, I’ll eat a Loco Moco, then wander down Kilauea until I find a restaurant featuring Waimea grass fed hamburgers.  And order two.

I don't think even the social media conspiracy theorists think the RR would go after a real rancher.  More like the small-timers selling their "illegal" meat (or milk, eggs, etc) on Craigslist who lives next to a neighbor that has an axe to grind.

I called Rainbow Rangers to come pick up an unhealthy stray I trapped. They returned my cal in bout three hours, and picked it up about an hour later. I think this change could be a good thing.
