It’s now legal for driverless vehicles to operate in Hawaii, with a driver in the vehicle:
Act 021, which Governor David Ige signed into law from House Bill 2590, paves the way for the eventual adoption of driverless cars. The measure authorizes the testing of autonomous vehicles on any public road in state, as long as a driver is present inside the vehicle.

It might be awhile until driverless cars make it to Puna and join the licenseless, insuranceless, thoughtless, mindless and sometimes senseless drivers already on the road here, but keep an eye out.

Wonder if they can read the No Right Turn On Red sign on Shower at the 130 intersection? Seems like no human can.

Driverless Ubers could be a game changer for carless folks living in the woods, the elderly unable to drive, women seeking to escape domestic abuse, etc... It would be really great if these companies used Puna to develop their off-road capabilities. Also great if a local startup came up with something that could deliver groceries, medicine, and beer autonomously!

I think you’ve hit on a sure fire Puna money maker. An autonomous beer delivery system using driverless cars wouldn’t require the overhead of a retail store. They could deliver the beer cold & “free” and still make more money than a shop. The only problem I would see is, how do you get keep the customers from stealing all the beer? It would require a password coded locker system, but that would still be worth the cost.
It would also have the added benefit of keeping a certain number of drunks off the roads.

There's a "No Right Turn on Red " sign on Shower turning onto Hwy 130?

There was a couple weeks ago. It’s way back on Shower (Hilo side ) and not right under the light like “normal”.

A red arrow already means "no turn on red". The sign is merely a courtesy.
