Moving to Puna?? Hawaiian beaches??

Hi Jeff,

Tough way to start out in a new place. Perhaps you can talk to the neighbers and find out what’s really bugging them and try to patch things up and try to let go of the hurtful things that have expired.

When we bought our piece of property in Orchid Land, we contacted our neighbors and ensured them that we plan to preserve the forest on our land and be respectful of them. I think they appreciated that and everyone we met was pleasant and neighborly.

Gosh Jeff, we live in HSRE and have feral pigs here...suprised they haven't munched away on your avos and guava...they love it.

It would be shame if they cut an avo down since really it would only serve them to let it fruit in your absence...

There was a guy doing a couple of the yards on our street...as well as ours before we bought it...met him a couple of weeks ago. We could call the realtor and ask for his contact info if you need it.

Doesn't sound like you're into a McMansion like the one on Kahakai...heeheee...boy that guy has had some stinkeye thrown his way for the house he built LOL!

sorry you've had a tough entry to the neighborhood....i also had a rat issue with my lot in hawaiian beaches, but that was due to the fact that they were living in the pukas (holes) on my property and coming out to eat all the fruits that were ripening....it would be beneficial to make sure that you have fruits harvested from neighbors or take out the invasives...you do not want rotting fruit on the ground as in the case with guava's, mangoes and also the avocados.....grass should also be maintained, although there are no ccr's in hawaiian beaches, it would be easy to walk around your block and ask any of the neighbors if they know anyone that does weedwacking services - they can give you good/cheap references.....having rats around the neighborhood is no fun - they are really big and scary but relatively easy to take out....just like any bug issue prevention is key so if you can keep it in check then that will keep your lot bug issue minimize.....along with the rats you'll discover the coakies, roosters crowing all night, barking dogs and even turkeys!

aloha jeff,

bummahs with the new neighbors. hopefully you won't stay "on the wrong foot," you started off on with them. legally, i don't believe they can chop down your trees, just the "overhang." it seems crazy to me that someone in puna would WANT someone to clearcut a lot. i guess the rats are taking over! i tend to agree with the other posts here, meet and greet face-to-face, and assure them of your neighborly intentions. $10 says they're haole's from the mainland. the only rats they've encountered previously are the ones driving the freeways!

Just a minor note: Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Hawaiian beaches is zoned A1a. That is an agricultural one acre minimum zone. This is not R- (residential) zoning. You can raise rats for a living there if you want to. You can grow avocado and let them fall on the ground if you want to. You can raise chickens and roosters if you want to.

It may be that your neighbors are wishing for the standards and requirments of a residentially zoned area. Then they should have paid more money for another location.

Aloha Jeff, and welcome to the neighborhood. I cruised by your lot on my way home from running errands. From a maintenace standpoint, yours is no different than a thousand other undeveloped lots in the Beaches. Other forces are at work here, it seems to me. Bet the neighbors got together on this one and decided they liked it undeveloped. There are grumps no matter where you go.

You are a bit past simple mowing however. Don't know what you intended to keep, but some of your bigger brush is three or so inches at the butt - chainsaw stuff.

Don't let 'em ruin it for you; yours is not the typical experience. Other of your neighbors will be some of the warmest and most welcoming people you have ever met.

I have a large zoning map from the Planning Dept and it shows A1a in that area.
Assume the best and ask questions.

I think the neighbors are thinking "Hey, it's a haole on the mainland, lets go after him!" After reading all the posts in this subject I found only one thing you can be held responsible for, your tree branch encroaching into the neighbors property. I don't think your lot is the only one favored by the rats there and I don't think those rats wear name tags with your TMK on.
One of my clients had a similar experience with his neighbor here in Kona and the neighbor cut down his tree. The neighbor was proscecuted for criminal property damage and had to pay $25K to my client. Don't back down, property right is still around in the US the last time I checked!
