For those who are still interested in earthquakes, there will be live webcast Tuesday at 7:30am PST of a simulated earthquake (pretty early HST but the test is being done in NY). The NSF has sponsored the test using a 1800 sq ft wood frame on slab home built to CA building code on a shake table that will simulate the 6.7 magnitude Northridge earthquake.

The link works if you cut and paste the whole thing. It looks like the hyperlink (underlining) ends after "13nov13". Copy from "http" through "headlines". Or, use this TinyURL conversion

Does not look like a very good test to me for 1.24 million. The quake was short.
I experienced the LA quake in 1971 30 miles west of Northridge and it was about twice as long. Had to wake up, realize it was not my dog jumping on the bed, figure out what was happening, run down the hallway and watch my mom freak out while yelling “get under the door ways!.” Was like being inside of a fun house, the floor moving from side to side, running down the hallway, . I think if this test were longer, there would be more structural damage.
But what do I know, I aint got 1.24 mil to chunk out.
At least it's obvious the largest amount of movement of loose things happens in the first shock.
Here's the link to the videos of the test:

The doorway is NOT a good place to run to in a quake. If you're in bed, stay there and protect your head. If not, get down next to a large object that will create a void of something falls on it--a sofa, big chair, sturdy desk--next to it, not under it.
All those caught on the Cypress structure during Loma Prieta would have survived if they had laid down next to their cars instead of staying in them.
