Laptop Repair
#11
Wyatt,
It was the bios/cmos battery I was referring to for leaving out overnight. The main battery has to be out also and the AC power has to be unpluged. You will probably have to remove the keyboard to get to the bios/cmos battery. It's about the size of a nickel. Leaving out overnight is overkill, as a few min is usually enough but go for the overkill. By doing so you clear the bios back to the default. That helps if it is an incompatible bios setting that has it hung up. After putting it back together try booting and entering bios setup. The jumper on the hd is certainily necessary. I have plenty of spare jumpers but I doubt you want to wait for me to mail some to you. I wouldn't bother trying anything else until the jumper issue is resolved.

Sure, email me your mailing address. I think I can spare the postage. Don't mess with anything else until the jumper is replaced. In some cases incorrectly configured hardware (jumpers) can pisz the bios off so it won't enter setup.

Well, I've had a lot of experience with older Macs and I'd done some internal work on up to a G4. I have a G5 now, which I haven't poked around much, and have some experience with OS X v10.4x. Not exactly a wizard, but they aren't all that complicated.

Wyatt,
I dug up some assorted jumpers for you and they will be in the mail tomorrow. I'm sure one will fit. However, I pulled two laptop hard drives and neither had jumpers installed. Are you sure yours had a jumper? There are several tech support forums that may be of assistance to you. One I frequent (not very frequent lately) is http://www.cybertechhelp.com

You may want to submit your issue there.

Les, my Mac Laptop is a G-4, brushed nickel or aluminum or something...it's a powerbook and it cost a fortune! It's also at leave 3 years old.

It was getting really warm, but my battery doesn't match the numbers l found for defective batteries. Then it started not making good contact for recharging the battery. Any ideas?

Aloha Pam,

Warm/hot may indicate that a fan is not working and cooling the system.

You can take the battery out of the equation by plugging in the AC according to article below.

You've probably looked at this link, but just in case...

Also, you might want to post your question on a Mac forum such as the ones below;
