Keaau PO - If You’re Part Of The Problem...
#11
The best part about using Local Local is I get a text message and a follow up email when I have a package.
I don't get much mail except for medical bills.

Last Monday I waited for two hours in line at the Keaau Post Office for one box. Only one employee working the counter as usual with a crazy long line. I asked about the new boxes outside and she said they don’t have the keys yet. Shouldn’t the keys have been shipped with the boxes?

"Shouldn’t the keys have been shipped with the boxes?"

When I bought boxes for Vacationland, the keys were always in a large bag inside one of the boxes.

Next Punaweb reader who goes to the Keaau PO, please ask if any of the workers there have checked for keys in the boxes.  Seriously, watching the sheer amount of disorganization there, they might not have.

The keys they're waiting for are probably what are called "arrow keys". They do not come from the box manufacturer. They are a post office item, used for PO access for the blue mailboxes and the cluster delivery boxes. The matching numbered keys are secured and locked away at night. Fulfilling the order for them takes a while. And then waiting for an area maintenance person to schedule the time to come and install them.....

I met the person who handles keys and box repairs for the PO a couple of months ago.  When I say “the person” that’s meant literally, there’s one man who handles the entire Big Island.

Geez. I remember when going to the Post Office was nothing to even mention. Ah, the good old days.

Like mentioned above when I worked for USPS there was "a guy" who did all the lock stuff. The people who have keys to the boxes have master keys (one key will fit every USPS box in the area) and they were checked out like they were launch codes to nuclear missiles. We were literally required to chain them to our person for the entire shift, and the key was designed such that it could not be removed from the lock unless it was locked. So once a box was unlocked the person was physically chained to it until it was locked again.

If there was a problem with a cluster box or whatever only "the guy" could fix it, and it always took several days. That was really a treat when I couldn't unlock a cluster box to deliver mail on welfare day when people were literally waiting for their checks at the box. By the third day the crowd was getting larger and they were more impatient and wanted me to hand them their mail, which was against the rules. Fortunately, all that stuff is deposited electronically now.

On another local social media site I read a post from a Keaau PO customer who contacted Kai Kahele’s office about the problem.  He received a phone call in response & was told a new postal worker has been hired.  Once the outside parcel boxes are functioning, with keys, hopefully it will soon go back to normal.  Anyone been there lately?  Update on the line?
(I haven’t, I stopped ordering anything that would ship in a box.)
