Why? All kinds of things can go wrong and if your insurer finds out, you could lose your insurance.
Just saw this on the news tonight.
Come to think about it, if you Uber or Lyft does your insurance cover you? Does the platform offer insurance? Can you imagine if someone rented your car, got drunk and took out a crowd of people standing on a corner?
Then there’s the matter of tax. Rental car companies pay a ton of tax, where an individual not nearly as much. is this just another under the table thing?
If you start doing this, don’t you have to become a “business” in Hawaii?
I’m all for the rental companies getting a dose of competition, but......

Sure, it's a gamble with the odds heavily favoring the car owner. This development is not surprising, given the ridiculous rates rental agencies are charging these days.

Yes: the GET is a tax on the privilege of doing business here. Any business.

I have relatives in Kona and know several groups going to the Big Island. Apparently, there is a huge rental car shortage and prices are crazy high. People who have reservations are arriving to find there is no car. Having a reservation doesn't mean anything. Maybe not an issue on a dense place like Honolulu, but on the BI I imagine it make it quite difficult.
I imagine you can make a lot of money renting out your car. I was told the name of the service that arranges it but can't remember the name.

Sort of like Uber, but doesn't include the driver.

A friend of mine has been getting $350/day for his new Dodge Ram. Can't beat that.
Assume the best and ask questions.

My auntie and uncle in Kona have a similar story; friend has a new Subaru (I think, not sure it is a Subie) and is renting it for a lot. By the time rental companies bulk up their fleet (and demand for these private rentals presumably subsides) you could make a couple years worth of payments.
