Why would one live in an area...

I thought everyone knew that!

We do.

Who thought it was a secret?

Based on some of your posts, you.

I wasn’t asking or expecting a reply from you, but I believe AaronM was.

That is so great to hear!  How do you feel the "live and let live" attitude manifests itself, in your experience?

Here in Hawaiian Acres you might see people living in a mansion, a shack, and a tent on the same block. Or you might see neighbors having a beer or smoking a joint on the street and no one calls the cops. Someone can run a business out of their home, as long as they aren't disrupting their neighbors. Retirees, old hippies, and cult members all enjoying the local farmer's market together. Smile
Oh that is such a perfect picture you painted!  Blessed are the free who live and let live.  It seems like the attitude is prevalent by natural selection.  The busybodies, who come here and think they know what is best for everyone else, thankfully don't tend to remain here over the long term.  At least that's what I've noticed.  BI tends to weed them out or so it seems.  I'm so glad you're having fun and feeling free!  Wink

True, although I must admit, my patience waiting for that to happen is wearing thin!

the prevailing attitude is "live and let live".

...until it suddenly isn't, because we have all these rules and laws just waiting to be enforced. If the "freedom" could be guaranteed, I could let the rest go -- all governments waste money on dumb things to some extent.

There are jurisdictions which don't require permits or licensing for building, plumbing, or electrical work on a private home. Hawaii criminalizes such work while complaining about a shortage of affordable homes and refusing to bring roads or utilities. Requirements can never be loosened; the unions will make sure of that. Living with one eye over my shoulder is tiresome.

Doesn’t seem to be stopping anyone. The number of new homes going up in Puna lately has been, well, not really “astronomical” but that’s the word that come to mind.
