First Impressions (10 things)
I would be glad to give you a little encouragement out loud. First thing don't be discouraged I think they spot that here right off the bat, be happy hell you will have just moved to Hawaii. Change your perspective about a job not necessary to lower your expectations just be open minded. You can meet alot of people here in a short time I know I have. Hopefully you have an engaging genuine character that seems to go along way here. Be tenacious in a nice way. I interviewed for at least an hour at Kaleo`s and only came out with an audition and am still in a probationary period. Some shifts just bussing tables. I've managed bartended and served for 20 plus years some people may feel it demeaning to do something lesser than you did before, don't feel that way. I've posted it before and I mean it I would rather be a dishwasher in Pahoa than a G.M.in Pittsburgh. I believe that the trades are picking up here quickly just my impression. I think your husband could find work just be open minded. I think it might have been Bullwinkle who said your not getting any younger get on the plane and get over here. I'd say that is good advise

Hey FJ! Thanks for the happy words. That is great to hear. We both are humble people and have no problem working really in any field. Hubby was just hoping to get into something that he trained for and enjoys Smile
I agree wholeheartedly that any job would be worth living in paradise! We have had a 5 year plan that is up in the fall. Just waiting for a house to come on the market that we can afford and then we will be moving! yay! I cannot wait. I have been a very patient girl.
Moving a family of 6 will be a big job but I am sure very worth it!
Its so interesting following folks who have finally made the move. Thanks for posting info and what not. I love following all of it!
Cannot wait til I can meet all of you in person! I truly am excited to start a new life, make new friends, have new adventures. And to hopefully slow down life a little and savor more.

Dream... We have corresponded in the past & right now there are positions for apprentice to journeyman listed, and some high tech positions & by next fall the groundwork for the TMT will start requiring a lot of skilled work for the next 10 years...

It did take my husband almost 5 years to find a perfect match for his tech skills (doing almost exactly the same work he retired from mainland and at a higher pay scale here.. )

It surprises soo many that there are these high tech jobs (I think this island probably has more astrophysics per capita than just about anywhere), and esp. with higher technology jobs, the on-island market competition is not a problem.

This island does have a need for elec. skill trades, with current wanted ads all the way from high tech to apprentice electrician...

If your family is OK with being job flexible for a bit, and you guys remain highly motivated, this island can provide a decent job after a bit... There may not be a slew of any jobs at any point, but just about anything you can think of may be available over time!

Well I made it down to Kehena beach yesterday. I must say the Bohemian lifestyle I have always admired and practiced quietly is in full swing in Puna. I got a strange feeling of being in Greece 2500 years ago. I really believe there is no place like Puna in the world today and to have a close representation of Puna today you would have to time travel. I get the feelings of past lives, ghosts, mysticism, glimpses into other dimensions. And No these aren't drug induced feelings. Just being as open to those things as I've always been, it all just seems to be a little more in reach in Puna

Nice your observations .
Always shop on the sales and coupons.
We have 38 varieties of avo and 30 varieties of citrus.
One rooster now and 60 hens for fresh daily free range eggs.
Smoke meat from the wild pig from time to time.
Make friends with a fisher person and have plenty fresh caught fish.
The farmers markets are good also.
Everything in season is cheaper.
We have friends in lower puna who have acres of avo's right now and a small fruit stand open daily on papaya farms road. They export all now to oahu to feed the millions, but their fruit stand is the best hidden gem in lower puna.
Again welcome and enjoy.
