Lilikoi and other Local Fruits...
#41
My lilikoi was doing very well and then in a matter of a couple of days SOMETHING ate all the leaves! It's struggling back, but what should I spray on it to avoid this? Isn't there a mixture of dish soap and water or something?

Aloha Carey! Good to talk to you. I was wondering if it was these buggahs...we regularly pick them off the papaya trees, etc. And they just devoured an aloe plant. I was told they hate eggshells too, so have started with that whole process. Have you noticed a change since you wired your yard LOL?! We'll have to head into town and grab some wire...(hope the notorious copper theives of HNL don't read this LOL). Mahalo my friend.

Hi Carrie,

I hope you are enjoying paradise! I had some of the fruit when I was there this summer. My kids did as well and I had to pick some up every time we went to the market in Hilo. We picked it up from the same vendor every morning. It is absolutel delicious. I can't wait to go back soon!

Aloha and hope you make it back soon if that's your wish...it's a different world for sure and I do enjoy the melting pot that is Hawaii. We get so programmed on the mainland with all the technology and infrastructures and it does take some getting used to - the fact that many places operate so, so far back in time. I have to wonder how many people fall in love with Hawaii on a vacation and then move here and go into extreme culture shock. LOL...

Carey, I have been using eggshells as my neighbor suggested and ROFLOL...I have a bunch of copper pennies surrounding my lilikoi...it's doing great! No visible GALS munching of late! Smile)) I would love to take you up on your left-over wire offer if I may...we have plenty of wire strippers!

I didn't bother eating much of the fruit(lilikoi) during my last stay. However, I did find a wild vine growing right next to the highway on part of my normal walk route. I routinely picked a couple and would leave them in a dish on top of the TV just for the smell. I would replace them with new ones every few days during my month there. I loved the fragrence they gave to my room. It sure beat dirty socks.

Hey oink, next time you and Diana are on Island
let me know. I will make you some Lilikoi butter for you to take home, as a Maholo for helping me save my spare laptop.

Aloha

Wyatt, thanks and I'll take you up on that. We have no plans at the moment as we are preparing for sending our oldest off to college next year. College visits etc. If we can we will be there this year. If we start building, we will get there for sure although possibly very briefly.

Yes, UH Hilo is a great experience and university seems to have grown and gotten better since I graduated. I am actually contemplating sending my daughter there next fall.

I would support him where ever he wanted to go, within our finantial constraints. We did the Fla Pre-Paid College Financial Plan, so there is some incentive to stay in Fls. Plus he has already been accepted to the FAU Honors College. Good thing he didn't get his smarts from me! He, for now, plans to major in education and physics. Maybe he can teach at UH Hilo in a few years.
