How often does Red Ginger...

...need to be watered? Also, when is the best time to prune them back? They seem to be growing out of control these days,but leaves are yellowing though...ever so slightly ...

We have lived here over a year & have never watered our red ginger (stands that are probably 20+ years old). We cut them back a lot (about 2-3x per month for flower arrangements & to get the dead out). Even the plants I have moved have gotten no real attention this year, they die back a little in dry spells like now, I thin them out, they come back, kind of like weeds...
