Respect for Hawaii?

Aloha Everyone,

Before I get to the point I would like to catch all my old Punaweb pals on my moving status and my absence from the forum.
I apologize for having become a lurker ever since my trip there this summer. Long story short... my plans are on hold for now on account of not being able to sell my house and having to take if off the market. There were only two things that turned me off when I visited...Work and School for my kids. I have discovered since then that the school system is absolutely horrible were I live and so my only major concern now is work.

Well, the reason I have decided to post is as I have said before I breathe Hawaii and I jump at any chance to read or research anything Hawaii.

Now recently I came across a show called "Maui Fever". I thought it would be great to watch and see how kids grow up there. What they do, how they live, and get a sense of what I want for my kids. In my personal opinion and to my incredible disappointment the show has only one thing in common with what I have come to love about Hawaii and that is the word "Maui" in the title. When I researched further and realized that the point of the show as to show how "locals" live on the island I was appalled at them even saying that. I since have found a petition that is currently being signed to take the show off the air. Many locals have signed it stating how disrespectful the show is to Hawaii its people and its culture, and I took the opportunity myself to do the same.

So many of you thought me so much about these islands and these people who I somehow hold so dear to my heart that I feel a passion for at leas attempting to make an effort in taking such a disrespectful show off the air. I anyone wants to research this and sign the petition I have included the link where I went to sign the petition.

I know this is not what I want for my family. I might as well stay in the mainland and move from the east coast to the west coast.

Sorry for rambling but I felt a need to make this known to all whom I have met on the forum and have thought me so much.

Aloha, Lenny,
I did not see "Maui Fever," but from what I have heard, it is not really descriptive of what most young people here experience or wish for. Yes, there is a party scene on the Big Island, but that is true almost anywhere you go. Please don't let a crazy TV show put you off on Hawaii. Those people make their money by showing the most lurid, sensational things they can find.

I haven’t seen the show either, but there’s so much trash on TV we’ve just disconnected it to prevent our heads from getting filled with junk.

I applaud your outrage and actually doing something about your feelings; there is a segment of society that gets a thrill out of this type of material...

I don't watch TV but there has been some discussion of this show on the WEB. It is described as MTV in Maui and so, of course, bears no relationship to reality. This too shall pass away.

Luberwhatever ---- no show can depict the "real Hawaii". The real Hawaii has been overrun by the false Hawaii that is looking for a conception of what the real Hawaii is about.

Don't take the show off the air. Turn the channel, or better, yet, grab yourself some real Hawaii and turn off the TV and take up the ukulele.

I have a hard time getting my bowels in an uproar over any TV program called "Reality TV". At best it is 'entertainment'. At worst it is 'garbage'. And pity the fool who thinks these programs reflect reality. We all may be better off if they stay inside glued to the TV for hours on end rather than out in the real world doing something like driving a D-9 Cat...

hollywood NEVER gets surfing or hawai'i right. and since the "maui fever," show is on mtv (i believe) you know they're mainly appealing to teens.

i've also gotta believe that any true "local," wouldn't be caught dead on a lolo show like that.

The "Maui Fever" show is about a group of kids whom reside on Maui and it follows their everyday life ,which includes all the drama / parties / relationships that most kids are involved .
The producers, as with any reality show,like to create hype - just like American Idol or Trump's "feud" with Rosie -that just so happened to coincide with the season premier of "The Apprentice".
I have tuned in to see what the show involves , and the show could be in Philly or Austin , it just happens to be on Maui.
Never once did I view anything that reflected poorly on Hawaii , its people , or its culture . Just kids being kids. Immature.

Maui Fever gives me a fever so I don't watch it but you have a good point to take it off the air. Another show that is horrible for our islands (maybe worse then Maui fever) is "Dog the Bounty Hunter" As a Native Hawaiian, I don't like seeing Hawaiian people disrespected by Dog's wife Beth.She yells at the innocent siblings and family members of criminals. It hurts our economy when people see all the crime and none of the good stuff that goes on in our communities. I am aware of the fact that there "is" crime here but to showcase just the crime is unfair. I hope the dog gets what he deserves and ends up behind bars in Mexico. I think that show should be taken off the air.
