Respect for Hawaii?

Do you wonder if Dog has a framed poster of Reno Raines & Bobby Sixkiller in his office for inspiration?

I have watched his show more than once, I'll admit it. It's hilarious. I think of it as more of a sitcom than anything else. The way they do things just doesn’t seem that real to me. The whole “Brah, your gonna turn your life around, right? Let me throw this pipe away so you don’t get in more trouble, blah, blah, blah” ride to the jail drama seems like total BS. Is that really happening when the cameras are off?

I don't really find anything offensive about it. When they do the Colorado episodes I don't get all offended about the way they are treating "white trash". And before I get slammed for saying that ...it was a joke people. Everyone is a bit too touchy on here lately.

I did cringe and then laugh when they did the Puna episode. Dog tells his posse that it's the dangerous side of the island and nobody wants to be there after dark. HAHAHA. Good, maybe so many folks will quit moving to Puna.

Now, joking aside, it's a reality TV show. Reality TV isn't very real, really. They are following him around 24/7 catching every fart he makes. Then they are editing for what will seem entertaining. I think we miss a lot of what really happens, good & bad. You rarely see an episode where he doesn't catch someone. Now that just doesn't seem right that he has a 95% success rate. Most of what you are seeing didn't really happen in that order. Some of the driving scenes and outdoor footage are used with episodes they don't go with.

I have wondered many times if some of the bust are a set up for the camera. Don't the people being busted have to sign consent to have their face on camera? Some of them seem a bit happy about the whole thing. And a lot of the families seem more than eager to help out & get their face on camera.

He is cheesy and was a convicted murderer. I think that might be why he has Mace instead of a gun. Don't get me started on Beth & her clothes. How does she get anything done with those nails?

I am willing to bet they smoke pot. You never see them bust anyone for pot, just ice. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I have also read that a lot of their “bio” is BS.

As for Maui Fever, I haven’t seen it but I can just imagine. I am guessing it is like Spring Break in Hawaii. The show is aimed to a late teen to early 20 demographic. The show is aimed to what they want to see. They want to see half dressed girls getting drunk and guys running around being loud & acting stupid. I don’t see the show affecting anyone’s opinion of Hawaii anymore than CSI would affect my opinion of Las Vegas.

If you don’t like the show, change the channel. Why sign a petition stop someone else’s’ right to spend 30 mindless minutes in front of the TV? Personally, I find Dr. Phil & Oprah self-serving idiots and feel that they exploit plenty of people but I am not starting a petition to get them off TV.

One more thing, if you haven’t seen the South Park episoide where Cartman gets made hall monitor and acts like he is Dog you don’t know what you are missing. He even has a “Beth”. He dresses like dog and does the whole “Brah” & Jesus thing. Watch for it in repeats of the ’06 season.

Since we're fessin' up...I love watching Dog. They make me laugh so hard...what YOU said, Punagirl...very funny stuff! I have to agree that if I don't like something I don't watch it. Why would I spend my time at home watching something that bothered me?

Those reality shows just AREN'T. They should do one on centipedes...heeheee...they could make 'em look bigger than they are and follow the bitees to the ER...very dramatic stuff yeah?

Now don't send me nasty emails...it's all good.

Hey, stop it with the centipede talk. I dreamt last night I opened a box, reached in my hand and pulled out three centipedes. If it had been four, it would have been the four centipedes of the apocalypse. Forgive me. I'm in escrow.

Hey Glen, Just have your noni on hand for the apocalypse.

Actually, I did have a run in with the dog. He was after our good friend who jumped bail and I believe that their is "some" truth to their menacing the public, because I was an innocent bystander but had to deal with their stupidity. Actually, it was more the son Leland anyway, our friends bulldozer was parked in our yard and Leland just expected me to hand the keys over. He couldn't find our house though and the thug he had with him who was familiar with our neighborhood couldn't find it either. This was before they had a show. I'm not a convict, our friend helped us to build our house and is a good friend. Anyway, Leland called (sounded like a little kid) telling me to hand over the keys. I told him I am not handing over any thing until my friend calls me. Our friend was definitly not a criminally minded and was in trouble for his wife turning him in for violence when she told me that she made it up. So, I believe the drama part is over dramatized but their is reality to it and I don't watch the show but had to watch her on the news the other night. The problem is, it is offensive if you live here and see it and yippie if they keep Puna from being over crowded but that is not the case. Puna (which I love) is already building up, and new stores are being built. The population seems to be growing very fast so I don't thank the dog show for keeping Puna country cause it is getting to be a busy place. If you live here, then you know how it feels to have someone trash the place that you love.

Yah, in the beginning I thought the show was funny and dumb but after watching two episodes, I had a lightbulb moment of what people view Hawai`i as and that is what bothers me. It's because I live, and breathe and respect my culture and sense of place I think it bothers me more. I don't think it is over sensitive at all, just protecting my own sense of place. Because I work with college students sometimes and the public in general that I am concerned about it. It's because I do care about preconceptions of foreigners views on Hawaii.
I think everyone has the right to their opinion though.

If Dog and his fellow criminals end up in a Mexican prison maybe they could film the episodes in there, now that might be interesting, i might watch it. They could call it "DOG WHERE HE BELONGS"
