Big Island Organizations & Programs Losing Funding
I think we will all miss Jagger Museum, but in all fairness, the decision not to rebuild was made before the election.
Certainty will be the death of us.

Let’s hope each and every one will be delicious, to make it all worthwhile.
Then perhaps we can move even farther back to the days when America and Volcano Hawaii were really great. Like the time Mark Twain was served dinner at Volcano House and ordered from the menu the “strawberry fed nene enveloped in leaves and baked in a hole in the heated earth.” Ummm… we’ll get there, after canceling one pesky environmental regulation at a time. It’ll take time, but not too much time as executive pens and chainsaws have made impatience easier to bear.

They don’t call them the good old days for nothing - - when a man could eat whatever flew, walked, crawled, or swam, full dominion over ALL creatures as God in Heaven above intended.

Don't forget that the Hawaiians ate Nene and green sea turtles, killed off the ʻakikiki birds, plucked Kiwikiu, and several honeycreeper species for their feathers...

Here on the Primal Edge - Saying “this will happen again” ignores the recent and upcoming protests in Hilo and elsewhere.

MyM - Maybe it's time Hawaii, the Hawaiian community, stands up and protect our own.
While the goal is laudable, what are the details to actually achieve this? Be interested to hear a plan for any of the recently discussed topics.

Could the community "Kaho'olawe" newly opened federal waters? Maybe? Only at great expense and up against a legal regime that is winning half-billion dollar SLAPP suits against those that help indigenous folks protect their territories.

How does a poor community like Puna pay to train/recruit/retain medical professionals when many of community members can't pay the basic fees for service or medicine?

Edge advocated for more taxes on the rich - which makes sense and fits the long history of the government making large community investments and recouping the costs through high taxes on top earners (MAGA seems to have a hard-on for the 1950s - must be fans of the ~90% marginal / ~45% effective tax rate for top earners at the time?). Do Benioff and Oprah stick around when the State comes to shear their wealth?

Not trying to be a naysayer just trying to understand how a state and community that relies on the federal government for 20% of their direct budget (not to mention many hundreds of millions in indirect benefits from Military and other Federal services spending like USDA/USGS/DOE/etc) unwinds that dependency without massive suffering.

Looks like U.H. is going to be subjected to those trials and tribulations sooner than most of us.

UH loses $30M in federal funds; 36 research programs to be cut
https://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/202...to-be-cut/
"The University of Hawaii announced Thursday it has lost $30 million in federal funding for research, just as the school sees the number of revoked student visas “literally (change) by the hour,” according to a Thursday announcement made by UH President Wendy Hensel.

At a Board of Regents meeting at Kapiolani Community College on Thursday, Hensel announced that as of Tuesday the cuts had affected more than 40 employees and gutted 36 research programs related to “diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility, sustainability, renewable energy, climate change and minority health disparities.”

In addition to the $30 million already lost, she said the 10- campus system possibly could lose $26 million in federal funds this fiscal year with more recent research funding cuts from the federal Department of Energy." (more at link)

Here is some context regarding the fisheries management:

And a photo of some the folks that are grateful for the opportunities for families and sustenance it presents:

And video of the gratitude for restoring what had been taken, apparently without consent or consultation, from indigenous people:

Below is a map of the restricted fishing areas.  The main island in American Samoa is Tutuila, and it’s quite a distance from Rose Atoll.  I was there 40 years ago so times have changed, but in the 1980’s the tuna fishing was done with seine trawlers, giant ships with nets extending over a mile off the back.  They even used helicopters that took off and landed from the ships as spotters.  The catch was brought back to Pago Pago Harbor, and unloaded at the Starkist Cannery.

At that time there were no ships of that type operated by Samoans, and they wouldn’t work in the cannery due to the smell, working conditions, and low wages.  There were Samoans who fished but doubtful they’d take their smaller boats to Rose Atoll.

I’d like to know what kind of fishing the people in the photo op engaged in, and how far they travelled from shore.  Most likely it’s similar to Hawaiians in their fishing boats, not that far.  And the Samoans can fish near the main islands all they want.

So who will benefit from this executive action?  Anyone? Anyone?
Huge corporations with deep pockets.

Thanks for the video Punatang.
Sounds like these actions will be of great benefit to the billionaires who can afford the giant ships and helicopters.  Not so much for the small boat fishermen.  If at all.

You are most welcome for the video and of course there are always a minimum of two sides to every story, every policy, every protest, and every Punaweb post.

Sounds like we and our neighbors will have new sources of income and fresher fish at better prices. That's good. Hopefully the added local eyes out there in the water will curb some of the atrocities happening to the environment from unchecked poaching activities. Balance is the key IMHO.

Do you know what they catch in mile long purse seine nets? Dolphins, turtles, and everything else in the sea. They pretend the vast collateral slaughter is mitigated, and I’m sure the regulations they want to remove will make it even worse, so now we can have even more dead creatures thrown back in or made into cat food.

BTW, check the amount of mercury in tuna vs mercury in vaccines. And yet… why is RFK jr so quiet?

I would be curious to hear how this affects the fishermen who work out of Hilo harbor.
