Seen any good movies lately?
Any experience or luck growing such sweet turnips here?

I haven’t watched the NHK turnip episode, yet, but I certainly plan to, thanks! Hopefully I’m not repeating anything in the program, but yes I have been growing small white turnips for many years. I use the variety Hakurei from Johnny’s Seeds. They are best when picked slightly larger than a big round radish. They are sweet, mild, tender without the bite or chewiness of regular turnips. They’re great in salads raw. Or on their own. Best seasons for growing are spring, fall, and winter (if not too much rain). I’ve grown them in summer, but extra care is required. You can cook the leaves as well.

Yeah, those look like the stars of that show, apparently grown all over Japan. I'm guessing you order the seeds as you haven't run across them, or something similar, in local stores?

As for movies, I'll recommend Arrival (2016), either for new comers or as a rewatch. Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Blade Runner 2049, Dune trilogy - all amazing IMO) and starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker, it's a visually stunning piece of contemplative sci-fi about the difficulty of communication, the mysteries of time, and the courage to embrace the consequences of choice.

Yes, the white turnips can regularly be found in markets in Japan. Probably just a few days from field to store.
At one time I grew vegetables commercially, so have favorite varieties. I’ve ordered from Johnny’s since the late ‘70’s (?). I usually buy bigger packages than the home gardener size at local stores. In general the local stores don’t usually have my preferred varieties, and the price per seed of the small packets is relatively expensive.

The NHK white turnip episode was quite enjoyable! I usually pick a little smaller here in Hawaii to retain the tender texture and sweet flavor.

Teacher Edge - May the Radish Spirit bless you. May your turnips grow as large as a scarecrow head. Thank you very much for your help!

If you like beards, or even if you don’t much care for beards, (but it will help to have some tolerance for them), I highly recommend Death By Lightning on Netflix.  It tells the improbable tale of James Garfield’s rapid ascension to the Presidency.  He’s not an historical figure I was familiar with, or details of that time period in American history other than cowboys.  No Wild West here, it’s mostly eastern politics.  The Republican Party had become weary of a vast corruption within its ranks, and decided a change was due.  Garfield is portrayed as a kind and caring man, someone who puts the good in the good old days. Based on real events, mostly, and surprisingly more humorous than I expected, but in a sly manner.  Stars Bradley Whitford and Nick Offerman.

There’s woodworking too but for some reason not by Nick Offerman’s character.  Although he must have consulted, as the hand planing looked authentic.

Not sure if anyone here is into creepypasta type memes like The Backrooms or The Oldest View, but heads up that The Backrooms movie will be coming out May 29th. Plenty of time to catch up on the genre, preferably late at night in a darkened house, deep in the jungle where no one will notice you've gone missing. They are about places that shouldn't exist and the people that find their ways into them. The Longest View is the more bite-sized, completed story, while the backrooms just goes on and on, many different interpretations.

Would love to hear other indie horror or just weird recommendations!

Never got much into the creepypasta, but that A24 trailer looks interesting - somewhere between Us, The Blair Witch Project, Severance, and maybe Cube or Ringu/The Ring.

If you haven't run across it, you might like Nexpo on youtube - mix of dark internet history, urban myth, and conspiracy theory (their "Disturbing Things from Around the Internet" archives are solid IMO). For a bit more on the level, but still dark tech, there's always the Darknet Diaries podcast as well.

I'm a big fan of Darknet Diaries! If you complete their hacker challenge you can get the podcast commercial free!

I suspect you (and a large portion of Punatics) may enjoy the "Why Files" on YouTube as well. Conspiracy theories of every genre, but usually with some comic relief and grounding in facts/science at the end.

On a long-haul flight from London to the US, I managed to watch a movie called Fackham Hall. If you like series like Downton Abbey, you might enjoy it. The one thing that made it good was Damian Lewis playing a very different role than any he's done before. However, it was fun. Some of the jokes were too obvious for my liking, but I did watch it to the end, which is rare for me.

Thanks for the recommendation! Their primer on Roko's Basilisk is well done and the hecklefish had some good quips - will definately check out some more.
