Anyone want Geese?
#1
Aloha Punafolks,

I'm planning on putting in an order for geese with Metzler Hatchery tomorrow. Goslings have to be ordered in batches of eight but I only want about three or four. Anyone else want to order geese along with me? I'll probably be calling them sometime Tuesday morning so there isn't a lot of lead time on this, though. Geese are only available in the spring and I want to get the order in while they still have the kind of geese I want.

A hui hou,
Catz

I'll ask hubby, he wanted ducks though. Our pond is not built yet. Do these geese need a pond for their habitat?

Maybe we should wait...am I putting the eggs before the pond or the basket?

Aloha Crizzy,

Ducks would probably have to be found locally since all the hatcheries I've talked to have said they won't ship ducks over here. Dunno why.

I think the geese need a pond if they are going to breed, but otherwise it isn't necessary. I'm not certain on that, though. We just have a stock tank for them to paddle about in, not a large pond at all.

I am pretty sure most species of Anseriformes, that is... Ducks, are considered potential invasive pest species in Hawaii, thus the mainland hatcheries won't ship them. I am surprised geese are allowed because one would think they have the same potential to "escape" and form naturalized populations....go figure.
For the most part Geese appreciate a pond but it isn't a neccesity . A small plastic trough , like a horse watering trough would probably work just fine.

I wish I was in a position to get one! Geese make good pets & watchdogs too. I owned one while living in Thailand several years back. He was the damnest thing I ever saw. He would actually tremble in the morning when he would first see me. Then he would follow me all around the property like a dog would until I left for work! In a lot of ways he acted like a dog come to think of it!

It appears there are a few hoops you have to jump through to import just about anything into the state legally. Check out the Hawaii State Dept. of Agriculture site here:

Well, so far, the order hasn't gone in, although Metzer says they can at least ship the birds to Hawaii. What I'm trying to find out now is if the birds get shipped all the way to my post office or if they get stopped in Honolulu. I don't know if the airlines will have someone take the goslings over to the inspection station or if I have to fly over to Honolulu to carry a package from one desk to another before it can be cleared. Anyone shipped in geese lately?

I did find out it's official latin name:

Family: Anatidae (ducks, geese & swans)
Subfamily: Anserinae (swans & geese)
Tribe: Anserini (swans & geese – long necks, non-iridescent coloration)
Genus: Anser
Species: Anser anser
SubSpecies: Anser anser domesticus

Somewhere in there should be greylag, but I forget where that part goes. It should also denote variety as "Pilgrim", I would think, but maybe I'm not Latin enough.

Hotzcatz,
When I ship birds in the lower 48 they are delivered to whatever address I put on the express mail label...my guess is they would deliver the birds to wherever you get your mail.I would check with the Express mail office to make sure how delivery will be in your area.
As for the latin names, since a Greylag is a domestic bird, it will not have a particular latin name assigned to it....sort of like all chickens regardless of breed are Gallus gallus. I think the breed name is simply put in quotes.
I hope you get your geese soon....they are alot of fun

Aloha, Andy

I'm interested in the egg production. The book I looked at the library said the best geese for eggs are Chinese geese and the best ducks are khaki campbells and those penguin like runner ducks so I hope those are available locally though won't be moving over for a while. then the book said chickens needed lot of commercial feed for egg production, ducks needed some and geese can just "freerange". If that's the case gotta ask my neighbor in Waimea how come he feeds his geese feed from the store.
