As I mentioned above, have your local postmaster apply for you. Be sure to tell him you need your address changed to "General Delivery" what ever town you want your box at. In our case it was Kea'au.

There's no residency requirement; although, some ill-informed PO workers may try to turn you away. If that happens, ask to speak to the Postmaster. I was initially turned away once and I pointed out that USPS advertises to get a PO box in another town to have the appearance that your company has multiple locations. The lady said she didn't know why USPS advertised like that. I asked to speak to the Postmaster and he apologized for her refusing me a box. I had even showed her a printout of the USPS website that stated what was necessary to rent a box and the lady still wouldn't rent me one. (It wasn't in Hawaii.) I have a Hilo PO box since I'm there every couple of days.

Is there any requirement to live in the postal zone prior to applying for the box? Or do you only need to show a local physical address when you finally get the box?
Curious because I currently live in Hilo and in a month I won't have an address! Which is scary. (I'll be in a sublet in Puna)
I guess I should go rent a mailbox. Is Hilo the only option for a private mailbox service?
Kathy, I don't recall the requirements about residency for a box application. You should be able to find out from the PO. You could file a change of address at the Hilo PO to forward to General Delivery at Kea'au or Pahoa to take care of interim mail.
There's a mail box service in Pahoa between the Sirius and Black Rock cafes. I don't know if they have anything available. It's odd that he hasn't posted anything on this thread. Business must be doing better and he's too busy to check the forum.
I remember when that guy was,,, uhmm.... gracing us with his numerous announcements. Can somebody post his number for stringbucket?

I don't think they are there anymore. It looks empty. Their number is/was 965-1111.

There's a little mailbox/shipping place directly across the parking lot from the Kea'au post office, next to the WIC offices. Last time I was in there, about a month ago, they still had some mailboxes for rent. Don't know the rates, though.

thanks you guys for your responses!
I've had General Delivery a long time ago, before I had credit cards and stuff. Don't they get weird when you verify your address as General Delivery.
Being as I have to change all my accounts, I think I'd prefer a box, so I'll look into that.

I picked up a general delivery box at the USPO, with no delay. Just walked in and filed the paper. They said; a regular post box could/would take a few months, however, because general delivery is only good for 30 days, they said; if i applied for a post box then, they would continue the general delivery until box was approved/available.

I had little problem with most of my credit card companies and other billings using a general delivery address. I just had to update the address later, when I got the box. But since you have a box now, maybe what you should do is to keep using that current box, and just file a forwarding address with your current PO to general delivery at your prospective PO. You may have to renew the forwarding at some point if you don't get a box soon enough. It'll add a few days to your statement delivery time if you still get them in the mail (as opposed to online).
