Tropical Storm Cosme heading towards Hawaii Island
#1
Hurricane Cosme (Now downgraded to Tropical Storm Cosme) is advancing into the Central Pacific region. This Hurricane (now Tropical Storm) is currently tracking towards Hilo (expected track is to turn southwards towards Southpoint), currently expected to be near the Island on Friday July 20th, 2007, possibly as a strong tropical storm (expected not as strong now). Please check your storm supplies now & check your property

Don't know, looks like it's not going to hit hilo unless it starts tracking more to the right. Regardless, it's always good to be prepared if your not do so.

I agree with ericlp it looks like it's tracking over southpoint and estimated max winds of only 35-40 knots. It's good to be prepared but it's way early to say it's heading to Hilo. I think they use Hilo and Kona as a reference point on the BI

I found his projected pattern going toward southpoint, BUT as we all learned during Katrina, sometimes these storms like to make an upward or right hook just before they hit land. So be prepared.

The weather channel says most tropical storms are deflected or weakend, by the trade winds. Thats why very few hit the islands.

Always do what evers next.

In the paper today, it says "the center of the projected track is expected to pass over South Point late Saturday or early Sunday, with sustained winds of 45 mph. However, meteorologists caution that the five-day forecast usually varies by 230 miles."

That could put it just about anywhere.

I'm not worried. The storm doesn't have a Hawaiian name -- those are the ones that seem to want to come home (just ask the people that went through Ewa and Iniki).

Cosme was projected to have a 5% chance of having winds over 39mph by the time it got to the range of having any effect on the Big Island.

That said, we are in hurricane season, and it is a good idea to be prepared. Who knows you may have to use your hurricane supplies for a tsunami instead!

More specifically, I believe it's the high altitude wind shear that "cuts the heads off" the hurricanes in this area. But one shouldn't relax with that trend. Locally-based climatologists and meteorologists say that conditions do, and will, occur where a hurricane isn't dismantled before making landfall on the Big Island.
