I dunno Radioguy, that storm image looks like it is heading directly towards our island instead of below it. Might be time to board up the windows!

I didn't want to say that! But it looks like it is heading directly for the big island, and it is still well formed with a tightly formed eye. And look at the size! I hope the NWS knows what they are talking about when they say it's going to miss the island. All the tracks on the web show a south track past the island. It think we are looking a a unbelievable amount of rain.

I think the center in the Sirocco graphic is still moving west-northwest. The northern reaches of the storm are expanding as it gets less tightly wound up, making it look like it is coming straight at us. This often happens with Atlantic storms as they weaken, and the center and worst winds should still stay south. At least I HOPE this is what is going on. Stay tuned.

Update:
Went out at 6:30 PM right before dark. Water gone on road since tide receded and also pretty much gone on red road by Poohiki. Waves looked good size but not huge. Still not much wind. No rain so far (9:15 PM).

I hear they evac'd vacationland...is that everybody there or just any tourist people?

HILO SHOW OPEN OCEAN WAVES OF UP TO 18 FT HAVE BEEN GENERATED BY
HURRICANE FLOSSIE. AS THESE WAVES APPROACH THE SOUTHEAST COAST OF
THE BIG ISLAND...SURF OF 20 TO 25 FEET WILL RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT
FLOODING AND DUE TO WAVE RUNNUP. SUBSTANTIAL SHORELINE EROSION IS ALSO
LIKELY. SURF ALONG NORTHEAST FACING SHORES OF THE BIG ISLAND WILL
RISE TO 10 TO 15 FT TODAY...AND WILL RESULT IN LOCALIZED FLOODING
AND SHORELINE EROSION. AVOID ENTERING THE WATER AND STAY AWAY FROM
COASTAL AREAS.

THE CURRENT FORECAST BRINGS EAST TO SOUTHEAST WINDS OF 40 TO 50

STRUCTURES AND TREES.

HOWEVER...IF THE TRACK OF FLOSSIE SHIFTS NORTHWARD...HURRICANE FORCE
WINDS OF 74 MPH OR GREATER COULD AFFECT SOME AREAS OF THE SOUTHERN
BIG ISLAND...RESULTING IN MUCH GREATER DAMAGE POTENTIAL.

...FLOODING IMPACTS...
OUTER RAIN BANDS WILL BEGIN TO PASS OVER THE BIG ISLAND THIS
MORNING...WITH THE BULK OF THE HEAVIEST RAIN EXPECTED AFTER AROUND
2 PM. EXPECT RAINFALL TOTALS OF 10 INCHES OR GREATER IN THE KAU
DISTRICT...AND 5 TO 10 INCHES IN THE PUNA AND SOUTH HILO DISTRICTS
THROUGH TONIGHT. THESE HEAVY RAINS MAY PRODUCE FLASH FLOODING...ESPECIALLY
IN THE KAU DISTRICT. A PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE SPOT WILL BE
HIGHWAY 11 NEAR MILE POST 58. SIGNIFICANT FLOODING IN THIS AREA

Is there an internet site that post a fairly accurate current rainfall total?

There are three "personal" weather reporting stations listed on weatherunderground.com. One is in Volcano, one in HPP and one in the Beaches. These automatically update windspeed, rainfall pressure etc. every few seconds. Go to the site, type in Hilo for the city and go to the bottom of the page for the personal weather stations.
