I grew up in Sylmar and remember the quake like it was yesterday! Feb 9 1971 We lived in Astoria Gardens on Astoria/Foothill Blvd.
Graduated from Sylmar High class of 1978.
Tonight's quake felt like a 7 with very strong "shaking". One picture fell of the wall and broke the glass. No other damage.

We felt it here! A good rumbler and seemed like it lasted awhile.

So far, 7 earthquakes in the ESE of Pu'u O'o & wsw of Kalapana area in the last 2 hours... the last one was 3.2 at 9:14, 5 were very shallow & mild, but the first & the latest were deep ... Seems there may be something Pele wants to tell Flossie...
gotta love Hawaii... Earth, Wind & Fire here this week! (too bad it's not the group.. many concert memories...)

Everyone okay? Well you all are just having a grand week! I thought I had it bad with super hot weather and bad humidity here in CT, but I guess that's not really anything to complain about now. It seems Pele has an opinion about Flossie getting too close. Everyone stay safe.

All the action and Jayne and I are here in NJ.
Sure wish we were with "You's Guys" for the trifecta. It's 09:30 here in NJ and we have to wait a bit to call home and see if all are ok. But by all your posts it seems that there isn't much if any damage in HB.

Oh, BTW the major news stations use file footage for the new eruption of Kilauea and shows the Pu'u o'o eruption of 92 including the lava flow of Kalapana.
All is good here and we will be back on the BI Friday.

As if lava, hurricanes, flooding, and earthquakes aren't enough, don't forget about the possibility of Tsunami after a local earthquake. To quote history:
'On November 29, 1975, an earthquake occurred off the coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. When the quake-generated tsunami struck, 32 campers were at Halape Beach Park. The sound of falling rocks from a nearby cliff, along with earth movement caused the campers to flee toward the ocean. They were then forced back to the cliff by rising ocean waters. The first wave was 5 feet high, but the second wave was 26 feet high and carried the unfortunate campers into a ditch near the base of the cliff, where they remained until the ordeal ended. Two campers died and 19 suffered injuries.'

Darn, hurricanes, lava, and now earthquake. And we just left the BI, HPP, July 15th. How come I miss all the fun! Wish I could catch the next flight back. Sure missing the Beach Road and all those 15ft waves we are missing

I don't know if I would call it fun, John, but it does seem more amusing in retrospect than it did in the actual event. I felt like I was going to get pitched right off my Queen Anne sofa onto the floor along with all the stuff flying off the walls and shelves.
The Bear has now discovered that rule all flight attendants know by heart, "Please use caution when opening the overhead bins as things may have shifted in flight." When he went to get a glass out of the kitchen cupboard, some wine glasses tumbled out. Luckily, only one broke and he did not get cut. I made him stand in place while I swept up the mess around his bare feet.
