Superferry foes gathering to fight special session
#21
There is usually always a "money trail" and i imagine under closer scrutiny one might find out why the super ferry was rushed into place without a EIA.

I have a few questions that I'm confused about... Sorry my memory is not what it once was.

Was it Lingle that was Governor when the ferry's were ordered?

Several years ago wasnt there a special ballet at election time asking whether the ferry should be required to submit an enviromental impact study?

Oh and on another note:
I was surfing Pohohiki last week and ran over a Sea Turtle... Poor fella stuck his head up right as I was dropping in!
Maybe we need an EIS for surfin too???

Surely the ferry is/could be more ecologically benign than air traffic, which is certainly the worst offender of all.

lets not forget that:

our political leaders are representatives of the people and all of the nature on the land and in the sea that we call hawaii.

our laws are created at great time and expense for the protection of the people and all of the nature on the land and in the sea that we call hawaii.

the eis process is a fundamental part of our laws

it is my opinion that:

whoever gave the HSF an exemption from having to do an eis should be brought to court and if found guilty they should be fined/imprisoned for crimes against the state

The way the ferry has been handled is horrible, but look right here in out back yard. Here I am a small passenger vessel, no big business, having similar resistance.

So does it really matter whether your a small or big business? I think there is going to a bind when any change comes on island it just takes time, understanding and commuication to make this place a livible for all of us.

Food for thought in regards to Superferry. When
Go Airlines is forced out of Hawaii, I'm willing to bet a lot of people are going to regret fighting the HSF. Especially when HA/AQ jack airfares up to 200.00 round trip again.

At this point it isn't whether folks are for or against the inter-island ferry, it is whether or not our elected officials can change the laws to benefit one company. I'm rather horrified by the idea of a special legislative session just for one company.

I suppose the legislature sees this as an addition to our transportation system, so they may view it as a benefit to the tax payers. An inter-island ferry has been tried before and they managed to get into business without all kinds of huhu. It wasn't protesters or EIS requirements which ended the last several ferry tries, they got eaten by the ocean. Maybe this one (if it actually ever starts going) won't be eaten by the ocean, but personally, I'm betting on the ocean.

I'm not sure if the ferry is going to hurt or help our islands and I'd really rather prefer they do the studies BEFORE running the thing back and forth. Two trips, two hundred cars each time. Where are they going to go what will they be doing? Camping in our parks? Two ferry loads will fill up the parks. On the one trip that manged to get to Maui, there were folks filling up their truck with lava rocks to take back to Oahu. Will our forests be stripped of hapuu? ATVs ripping all over folks' pastures? Can you imagine Memorial Day if all the Harley riders can get here with their bikes really easily? What effects will the ferry have? Does anyone know? I think the uncertainty of what to expect may be part of what's fueling many folks' dislike of the idea.

Either way, they still shouldn't make special laws to benefit one company.
