Greetings From the 9'th Island

Hello everyone, I've been lurking for awhile and I guess it's about time to post a question or two......

We've been building two houses in Eden Roc for, not quite a year now. The houses are package homes from HPM and they're dry framed. We're waiting on a plumbing permit, install and inspection for the gaslines and we can begin the finish work on the inside. (hopefully within the next two weeks)

We've talked to Lowes Home and Home Depot here in Vegas about cabinets but the problem is if we order anything from them, all business transactions have to be resolved from the location we ordered from, Las Vegas...

We weren't very impressed with the quality of cabinets that came with the HPM packages (particle board) and we would dearly love some local alternatives. The stuff we found locally (Las Vegas) was running about $10,000-$15,000 minus install, we would hope there is something of decent quality significantly less than that. I don't want to pay more for the cabinetry than I did for the lots... Any help would be appreciated...

The second question(s) I have would be concerning catchment systems. What is the minimum size catchment required for insurance purposes? In your experience who has been a reliable source for installation?

I haven't experienced the joys of puna/vegas culture shock yet but I'm definitely looking forward to it. Thanks in advance....

Hi, Bill.

Welcome! You have joined a group that has an amazing wealth of information.

The house we bought has cabinets from Home Depot. They seem to have a variety to choose from when you special order. Ours are solid wood, not partical board.

When we called around for insurance, companies wanted us to have at least 10,000 gallons of catchment.

Best of luck in your building.

Robin

Thanks for the replys.. I will definitely be following up on them.

The logistic problems of building in Puna while living in Vegas have been....more than a little amusing... I had to fly over once just to keep the excavating contractor and the builder from getting into a fist fight. (I thought that kinda thing only happened in Vegas)

Welcome Bill,

Gene and I are fellow Eden Roc'ers currently living in Northern CA, far northern! LOL

I have heard and read on this forum that locally made cabinets are far superior to those shipped in by say Lowes or HD, as they are weather curred before construction. Supposedly that seems to help with fit and life of the cabinet. Haven't done it yet so don't know if this is accurate, but feel it is! Ask to see completed projects would be my suggestion.

Good luck to you and yours!

If you have any questions about Vegas don't hesitate to ask, we're pretty familiar with a lot of little unknown places.

Hopefully we'll be in your neighborhood about the same time. I'm making a concerted effort to get one of the houses done before Christmas for my parents. The idea was to build side by side houses so we can keep an eye on them. Our daughter has volunteered to "grandparent sit" until we finish the other house and make the move ourselves. We'll be over Nov 11-14 to see the houses in person for the first time. Fun!

Hi Bill,
The logistics of building in Puna while living on the mainland certainly does make it more than amusing! The company I work for is currently building in HPP for a couple who live near Vegas - they've had quite a few "experiences" also. Thank goodness for digital cameras and e-mail!
Hawaii Catchment has done water tanks installations for us and we've had good experiences with them (982-8888).
Why don't you order your cabinets while you're here mid November? You could either upgrade the HPM cabinets, or order from Home Depot here in Hilo. We send people to S&S cabinets a lot also (935-2455), but their prices will most certainly be more than HPM or Home Depot since they are custom cabinet makers, but the quality will be better. Good luck with finishing the house, it will all be over soon.

Hey Bill, sorry I didn't read this thread of posts until now - we're in Eden Roc also, but are living in our RV while building our home. Check out our website at www.moonoverhawaii.blogspot.com and feel free to contact us for any info - we're happy to share our experiences and list of contacts. Welcome to Eden Roc, neighbor!!
