Thieves!
#21
I appreciate the offer Brad, but I replaced the tools the next day. It costs me more to be without my tools than to replace them, so I had to take the hit and go buy new ones.
How's that tile coming along? I'm going to be over in your neighborhood doing a job soon, so maybe I'll stop by and check out your progress.
Thanks again for the offer.
Aloha,
Mark

bringing this forward because of Cat's recent theft attempt. Need to keep the THEFT thing in the for front and Rob's idea for the homming devices is good. I'm not building off site but I'm in the middle of HPP and enyone building in HPP who wants to try something out let me know, I'm in it to win it.
Or if you want to rent a guard dog?

Do I have this right: The cops drive THEIR OWN cars? Gotta change that.

A yeah, that's it! Unbelievable isn't it, but then again, perhaps it's secret agent number 9!

Seriously, I think Hawaii 50 and even Magnum, they used their own cars. But seriously, in real life yes yes, they do!

EDIT: OH duh, I didn't read back thru the entire thread...everyone else has already mentioned this! Now we just need the puna registry where folks can register their colors (tongue in cheek).

I used to live in a warehouse full of metal artists - lots of tools that all looked the same. Once a year we'd haul them out to Burning Man for a month & they would disappear. We came upon an easy solution - we each picked an individual color scheme & spray painted our tools. It makes them easy to identify, even from 30' away & they don't get stolen as much...I'm guessing it's hard to re-sell a tool with a gaudy paint job.

In my case, my stuff is spray painted bright yellow with hot pink smiley faces + my initials. Some of my guy friends don't even want to *borrow* them much less steal 'em, LOL.

I'm going to take the extra step of dremmeling my name in when I get everything to Puna, since you can paint over pink & yellow Smile

I have a home on 15th street and have just learned that a house down the street was recently broken into and all the brand new furniture stolen. The thieves had a furniture type van. Maybe the thieves have an inside connection letting them know who has recently gotten new furniture?

That's pretty bold, and I think we have identified the number one threat to the quality of life in Puna, and it is not lava or frogs.

I am sorry for the person who was the victim of this crime.

Girl that cares for Mom says it's real common around Christmastime that thefts go up big time.

I guess the thieves have their own "shopping" to do.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Re burglaries:Although this forum prepared me somewhat for the problem of being ripped off, I naively thought it wouldn't happen to me, seeing as our place is way off the beaten track. But "they" stole my son's laptop, the only thing of value in the whole house, during a 1-hour trip to town. They had to have been watching. We've interviewed all the neighbors and they're stunned because there haven't been any robberies in our neighborhood for years. We can lock up when we leave but that's not very effective since anyone can break in when we're not there. Any other ideas for prevention? (We barely have electricity so spendy security systems are not an option nor are they my style.)
