Lamont Ranch Happenings

quote:
... hair sheep

We are considering a few hair sheep to use for weed control.
I've worked with cattle, goats, pigs, chickens, lots; and only a little with sheep.
Question: we need to know what the sheep will and (probably) won't eat.
For example, stuff we need eaten: ageratum, grasses, 'sleeping grass'/thorny-crawling mimosa, albizia seedlings, etc.
Stuff we do not need eaten, especially young: banana, papaya, coffee, etc?

Sunday.... we have been literally inundated with pigs. 36 in the sheep pen this morning, more outside... eeekkkk.

Theo got brave and shot three of the smaller pigs. Our new tenants in the cabin skinned and cleaned them; we had baby back ribs for dinner! Wooo Hoooooo

Unfortunately it did not scare the pigs away, so we will be shooting a lot more this next week. If anyone wants to shoot, clean or get pork, let us know.

A question on wild boar meat... I realize pork has to be cooked to a certain temperature to kill internal parasites, but are there any other precautions to keep in mind? Otherwise, seems like we have lots of free meat on the hoof here in Puna.

The big problem, as I understand it, with wild boar is that local's smoke it but then don't really COOK it. There is no reason for it to be unsafe that I know of but I cook pork to death.

The wild pigs have very very little fat on them. It actually makes the meat a little more tough, so they need to be marinated im lots of salty stuff and then cooked long and slow.

We have pen raised a few "wild" pigs and the meat was wonderful. Nice marbled meat from eating whole papaya and banana leaves. Yum!

Our sheep are eating not only "sheep ration" from the feed store and some occasional alfalfa, but also lots of papaya every day, leaves from banana, ginger and wiwi. Flavor should be great. Wonder if I can get them to eat garlic???? LOL

The wild pigs continue to overwhelm us. The new tenants in the cabin are from Alaska and are used to hunting and prepping wild game. Wooo Hoooo.. they are taking down pigs and we are filling the freezer. Pigs have eaten all the papaya and sheep and chicken food for two weeks now. Guess we will be building some lockers for all that too.

Bad news: Bob's mom is not doing well and he flew out suddenly to the main land this morning. He will return January 1. It is my great fortune that the new tenants want to participate fully here at the ranch with animals and maintenance.

Aloha to everyone.

Bob is off island, on the mainland and doing fine. We had a GREAT adventure today. Remember I lost all those coffee trees? And that we figured out a herd of wild goats/sheep ate them? Today we shot and dressed out two wild goats. We had goat ribs and goat stew for dinner. Wooo Hoooo!!!!1 Living off the land.

Gotta love it. Also have plenty in the freezer if anyone has anything interresting off their land/farm to trade.

Aloha, Pam

Hey Pam, are you still having pig problems? My son and his friends are always looking for good spots to get pig, and they will come up and haul away as many as they can if you like. My number is 938-2540, give me a call if you would like some assistance in thinning you pig population.
Aloha,
Mark
