Freebird :) Goose or Duck needs home
#1
Aloha all!
We have a stunning black & white duck or goose wandering around Vacationland who needs a home. We think it was abandoned here last night. A neighbor is taking it in until Monday, then it goes to the vet. We want to find a permanent SAFE home for this lovely bird. He has no fear of cats & will be eaten if he stays here in Vacationland - too many feral cats in the pukas if he manages to not get hit by cars first! I'm trying to ID the bird on the internet & will post when I find out. If you have a safe, fowl friendly home with a pond, this is a gorgeous bird! I'd take him but I don't have my own land yet Sad((

And no, it's not a Nene Smile

From the brief description and a hunch, I would guess that it's a "mutt" with Muscovy Duck genes. Does it have red, warty stuff on the face (not diseased, just bird decoration)? Have you seen the waterfowl at Waiakea Pond in Hilo? Lots of crazy stuff there, along with some winter visitors from the NA continent. Oh, and an unbanded Nene or two, apparently wanderers from the birds release at the Shipman Estate.

Aloha Les,

Nope, no red stuff on its head. In fact the beak is sleek & black. I'm still looking on the web to try to ID.

You can always rehome it at Wailoa State park, they have a huge flock of assorted ducks and geese that live there. I even saw a pair of Nene last time we were there watching the ducks.
