Where does one obtain federal income tax forms (booklets and instructions) locally?

There is an IRS office in the Hilo Lagoon building on Aupuni, next to the state building. They will have the forms though not sure of the timing of when they get the new ones in.

You can download tax forms from their site, together with instructions as to how the forms are to be used.

Be careful, some of the forms on the IRS web site are "Info Copy" only and you actually will have to order the real forms from IRS. It takes about two weeks to receive them.

In the State Building at 75 Aupuni Street, behind the new Court Building - go in the front through the metal detectors and ask for the office where you pay taxes. They have them all there as well.

Most of the post offices also have the basic forms but not lots of the other forms and work sheets that some people need to accompany their tax forms.

Thank you everyone. I had been on the respective web sites for state and feds but really didn't want to download and print all the forms and instructions necessary. I ventured to Hilotown today. 75 Aupuni and through security screen there is the State Tax office and forms. Just down the street mauka is the Lagoon Building where the IRS office resides and plenty of various forms and instruction booklets.

Forms are good, have you tried online services. I have used http://www.taxact.com for 4 years. No software to buy, just set up account with username and password. Try it for free, no pay until you want to print or e-file. And if you have a refund from the Federal, you will get check in about two weeks. About $30 total.

yes, I switched to online or software about four years ago. It saved me from the dreaded paying a tax preparer when we briefly had a rental property.

I haven't tried Tax Act, so far I like Turbo Tax better than H&R Block software, by far.
Having the whole process electronic is great. You don't have to order or download any Federal forms, and the software checks for tax law updates every time you start it up.

Plus the cost of the software is tax deductible, FWIW.

The tax software has direct links to the correct publication on the IRS site when I've desired to find out more on any one tax issue. While I can search the IRS site myself, it's nice to have the publication found for me. Then there is online help and online forums.

As for the state forms, they are all online, and short, as if you itemize deductions Hawai'i takes the federal and has a one page form of adjustments.

I would rather print the forms anyday than go to the State building, deal with a parking meter, and a security screening. It's not that hard to go there, but printing is pretty easy.

TurboTax also remembers last years information (a surprisingly useful feature) and lets you import data from financial institutions or record keeping software. As a landlord it remembers things like depretiation on properties and automatically calculates this. I have even done amendments using it. I am a huge fan of the TurboTax. While I started using TurboTax 6+ years ago, today my taxes are complicated enough that I shudder to think what I would go through without it. And if your tax situation is more simple the price is cheaper and it still offers may advantages. Good luck dude!
