Kilauea Current Status Report issued Jan 29, 2008 18:24 HST Volcanic-Alert Level WATCH - Aviation Color Code ORANGE
This report, in addition to maps, photos, and webcam images (available using the menu bar above), prepared by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO):
A channelized `a`a lava from the rootless shield that collapsed on Saturday morning has advanced approximately 0.4 miles into the Royal Gardens subdivision. The flow was mostly over previous lava flows between Prince and the now-buried Royal Avenues and was makai or seaward of Tubarose St. So far, the only previously uncovered area that has been inundated is at the uppermost end of Ali`i Avenue - small breakout from the channel advanced onto Ali`i Avenue before stalling.
Lava flows advancing through vegetation are hazardous and can produce fire and methane explosions that propel chunks of lava and rock several feet into the air. Lava advancing over asphalt produces hazardous fumes that should be avoided.
Mahalo to Hawai`i County Civil Defense and the Fire Department for providing the overflight. Hawai`i County Civil Defense is aware of the situation and has taken appropriate measures.
Hawaii County Civil Defense however has not updated their site yet.
