Earthquake at 1:13 AM in Mountain View
#1
Whoa...my first earthquake! Literally shook me awake. Or was this just Madame Pele burping after chug-a-lugging all that rain water?

OK, so I've been a Pollyanna about quakes. What's that website that shows how large of a quake has just occurred and where the epicenter is?

And what should I know about living with quakes? I know folks have said they go under their houses (for us on P&P) to check for damage. Should you actually try to leave your home during or after a quake (to avoid further aftershocks?). I'm happy to report that those huge sheer walls stood their ground, so to speak!!

Pretty excitin' stuff around here the past week! Enough already! My sweetie has been in Canada for 3 weeks and has missed ALL the fun!

OK, so tell me about quakes....

Katie, the innocent newbie who may have trouble getting back to sleep now....and yes, I'm sure lots of you will say, "THAT was no quake, that was just an itsy bitsy tickle!"[:0]

map, 3.6, looks like Kilauea, but could be Mauna Loa, the location is given in terms of distance from Hilo.

I felt it, jolted me, and I said "here we go" got in the doorframe, and it was over.
I wouldn't worry about damage unless it's at least over 5.
A big earthquake in my book is near to a 7 on the Richter Scale. Or larger.
Each increment on the scale in whole numbers is 10 times more intense.
So a 3.6 is not much, but it got my attention. The thing is you don't know when they start what is coming.

So far I've been in two major quakes, Sylmar '71 and Loma Prieta '89, and lots of smaller ones. Experience doesn't cause me to fear a big quake any less!

Hi Kathy, thanks for the info.... I just found this webpage, too...
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/rece...027652.php

Suppose it's the same info, but has a map, and also lists the distance from the epicenter....it was 2 miles from Volcano, and 10 miles from Mountain View.

Heck, if this was just a little one, I'll TRY to go back to sleep! LOL!!

When i was there in like 1995 we had 7 of them on big island in 5 months the island is solid rock so they do hit hard, up in seattle the 6.5 i was inside a store and ran outside to watch all the telephone poles jump up and then sit back down like 20 feet in the air. looked down the parking lot and watched all the cars do the same. turned around and all the stucco on the building was cracking. A lady a little while later was crying her house had slid off the footings. dont mean to scare you next time just hold on tight.

I slept through it myself, but my neighbor was mentioning today that the little dog his other neighbors have started barking like crazy and woke him up and then a few seconds later there was the earthquake.

"I like yard sales," he said. "All true survivalists like yard sales."

I guess I only feel the big ones....

I was on the phone to with a neighbor... And he said he just felt something... I didn't feel anything but all the frogs got quiet so I guess there was little quake.

It amazes me how animals even frogs know before hand when it's going to happen. I wonder if they can hear it?
