I'm going to the mainland soon for a visit and my sons want some cool t-shirts.... I seem to remember one I saw several years ago with "humuhumunukunukuapuaa" and a picture of the fish... It was quite cute! But I think I saw it over on Kona side, and was wondering where I might find some cool t-shirts on Hilo side. Any suggestions? And what's your idea of a "cool t-shirt"???

The Surf Shops in downtown Hilo are a good source, otherwise there is Crazy Shirts in Hilo at:
Prince Kuhio Plaza
111 East Puainako Street, Ste. 540
Hilo, Hawaii 96720

or online you can go to Desteenation for lots of authentic Big Island T-shirts available in one spot.

Creative Arts Hawaii might be another option too.
500 Kalanianaole in Hilo

I'm not sure if they are alway open to the public so call first. I know that 2 or 3 times a year, they heavily discount their seconds and returned merchandise (as in $2-3 for a printed T-shirt). So watch for those sales (there's no set schedule that I know of, but they do run ads in the Tribune-Herald).

At one time the Nanawale home owners association sold t shirts for their association. I believe they were around $12. John Rabi wore one on an overseas tour and someone loved it so much he gave it to the person! I don't know what the graphics were but evidently they were cool.

You might find the humuhumunukunukuapuaa T-shirt at Hilo Hatties.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Thank you all! You've given me a huge selection of locales to check for t-shirts! And for future reference if anyone hears about that sale for Creative Arts Hawaii discounted t-shirts, that'd be a great thing to post on Punaweb....I could stock up for my next mainland visit!
Again, mahalo!

You might check at Hawaiian Force. They are on Kilauea, I think at the cross road that comes up by the Hilo Farmers Market. Nice designs of 'ulu, kalo, etc.
Regarding Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, it might be more esoteric and cool to find an o'opu (fish) design. It's been/being promoted as a replacement for the trigger fish as an Island icon. The trigger fish has an interesting name, but it's claimed by the o'opu promoters that the o'opu has more relevance to Hawaiian culture. The trigger fish is mostly popular from a haole-Hawaiian song, My Little Grass Shack.

Oh my gosh....I had totally forgotten that song and the part that goes, "And the humuhumunukunukuapua'a go swimming along"..!!!!! Now I can't get the tune out of my head!!! Thanks for the memories! I think I learned that song on my little ukulele when I was 12 years old on O'ahu in....oh, a zillion years ago....
