How open and tolerant should Punaweb be?

I also like David M's suggestions. One thing that might be interesting to add is a community rating/voting system that would allow you to easily determine when something is problematic.

This should allow members (active and lurking but signed in) to indicate that a thread is a flame or in violation of forum policy. The system can then automatically send something to the 'dog house' or alert you or an administrator. In order to prevent 'mob rule', the vote should be invisible to all others.

There are many on this forum who have posted over time more than others. Perhaps we needed more info as moving to a living oozing volcano is not something one does everyday. Perhaps we had more time on our hands and viewed this as a social forum?

There are many on this forum who were busy in the early years, the quiet years, welcoming new members (doesn't happen much these days) and encouraging participation, searching for strategy in purchasing, and looking for a home, sharing a funny antidotes. Many slams have been made over the past 6 months about people building their numbers as if it is a conscious plan. So here is the math for you, as was pointed out long ago by another active member.

Some are more curious than others about the culture, what is aloha, what is a Punatic, the geology, the house building, the gardening, the astronomy and some just meeting neighbors.

Thank you Rob for this forum. You are probably the most tolerant moderator I have ever come across and I do appreciate that. You are even handed and above board in my opinion in regards to the PW. I hesitated to post for fear of driving up my numbers ya know! [:0]

PS I too have been threatened in the past by one member of this forum, in email and via phone! I especially like the tolerance here but not all DO, despite their claims! It didn't get to the point of crying to Rob with this information, or asking for his help, but many others on this forum know who the person who threatened me was, why I was threatened, and oh yeah just be careful. Aloha!

Carrie and mella 1? Hey there. I think you may have misinterpreted my endorsement of lquade's get-rid-of-the-numbers idea.

Personally I could care less about them.
I think they're silly and senseless on all the forums I visit.

To my way of thinking, we're all equal.
A bunch of Zeros. Ha!

However there are people on the planet, and we've seen some a couple of them in action here over time, who seem highly motivated by the idea of keeping score, yah?

First of all, Mahalo to everyone. You are Punaweb.

The software we use here was developed elsewhere and provided free over the internet to groups or communities wanting forum capabilities. I am not capable of redesigning it in the directions suggested. But they are useful suggestions. I could turn off the post count function but see no compelling reason to do so. It has a minor purpose in identifying established members to newcomers and vice versa.

I am pondering the Dog House Forum theory. It might be an efficient way to put posters on notice that lines are being crossed and avoid directly having to wag my finger at them. No one much likes being told what to do and I don't enjoy doing it. Offensive and defensive postures get complicated quickly.

Meanwhile I am also considering taking a much more conservative line on members making personal attacks against me or other members. It is not civil behavior and I think I have been too tolerant. I learned years ago that there are critics everywhere you go in life and on everything you do. If your opinion of yourself is dependent on others then that is a real problem. A lesson years back was when I was working with Habitat for Humanity - dumbfounded to find people complaining about that organization's work.

As time moves forward we (and I) simply have to recognize that there will be people who cannot function under the house rules or in this atmosphere. I'll just have to deal with that on a case by case basis and hope that they are rare occurrences.

Rob, in answer to your question about what to do if someone emails you about a naughty particitpant on this forum.... I don't think you should necessarily do anything about it. I guess it would just be my way of keeping you as the moderator, in the loop so you know what's going on on your site.... That's all. I would hope that you don't have to get involved in the "poopiehead" arguments that sometimes happen here, but I know sometimes you do find yourself involved and I figured you would prefer to have all the info in front of you. I guess that didn't come out too clear in my last post.... Sorry bout that.

Anyway, what if instead of numbers of posts, we just had a "member since" kinda thing and a location where the poster is from. I think that would be kinda cooler....

Also, what if there was another section where people could post threads about how the site could evolve over time or a section just for more personal exprience kind of posts for the people who need to blow off some steam after a long, crappy day Smile

I dunno, just a thought.

Rob,

Although I just recently registered as member of the punaweb, I have been reading it for over a year now. I have always been impressed with your judgment as a moderator of the forum. Your positive character shines through not only in your values that you express in your role as moderator but also in the fact that you are willing to take so much of your own time to provide a much needed resource for both those who live in the Puna district and those who are comtemplating moving there.

I am one of those who is considering moving from the mainland to Puna. Quite frankly, a two year degree from "Punaweb University" should probably be a requirement for anyone who moves to Puna from outside Hawaii.[Smile]

I think the labeling (the category that changes with number of posts) is good, as non-islanders start to learn Hawaiian painlessly. Those of us on the mainland can feel that we have a link to the place, even when the snow is falling (or mudslides, tornados, etc are happening).
There are more subjects and posts happening now than when I joined, so some threads I don't read (I have no kids, so schools aren't of interest) but that is also good, as everyone has a chance to relate to others, about subjects that matter to them. Builds community.
I was a bit annoyed with the "but I live here and I know" attitude that Petah held, but I was surprised to have him "disappeared". Now that that has happened, I am thankful that my anti-Puna library feelings were tolerated.
One caution, though - when the Volcano subject becomes active, I get alarmed, thinking that the lava flow is "on the move"! Please don't use that thread for comments about a walk in the park, or asking what the off-shore visitor can expect to see, or talking about lava zones - my heart can't take it!

Punaweb was a "sleepy" forum five years ago, but just like with every forum that stays around long enough, the traffic (members & postings) increases over the years. With more traffic Rob has to spend more time to read.
