Can you describe what work or performance you will be contracting for?
Sometimes I recommend that people consider not entering into a general concstruction contract. Depends. There are other ways to do things.
I will quickly offer two bits of contract advice though:
1. Never get into a contractual relationship with someone without clearly knowing how to get out of that contractural relationship.
2. Require a specific list of what is included and a specific list of what is not included.
But do share with us your intentions on this pending contract.
Aloha

Just building my 1-bedroom house(a studio with the loft). The GC is very good and I have nothing to worry about. My main concern is that it will take much longer than preliminary estimated.I am planning to stay on the mainland and have some plans to make.
Rob,thanks for the idea for the list of what should be(not)included.
Could you, please, give an example when the contract is not recommended?

Your construction contract should include Plans, Specs (whats going into the home) and information about whether the costs are hard costs or just allowances. It should also cover change orders, what it costs to make changes etc. Before you sign, make sure you understand your obligations, what the contractor is going to provide for you, what warranties are included and what time frame the project should be completed in. Get several references and speak to these people. You will know if your contractor is good or bad. Check local lenders who may have worked with him. Make sure of your choices, do your homework and building can be a wonderful experience.

I agree with Dennis, building a home is not a stressful experience if you work with quality people and you understand everything about the process. (I had several homes built for me and only 99% of my hair is grey!) [

Thank you, Dennis and everyone for the input.
Now it's the laughing session on Punaweb.
I didn't know that the GC is supposed to have the contract!
So,Rob,here's the proposition: new section of the forum - "Punajokes".You have my written permission to put my post there.
Anyway,if anyone would share some experience on the details,it would be wonderful.

AIA has standard construction contrcts with the T's and C's to get the job completed.
Think, material and payment bond.
Get a certificate of insurance with you named as the additional insured.
Here's one that alot of owners get burned on...make a schedule as an exibit of the contract. This will become part of the contract and will bind him to complete the project in a timely fashon.
