Island hoppin'
#1
Hello to all:
My wife and I plan on visiting the BI in October to narrow down our search for the sub division that most fits our needs. We plan on buying our "retirement home" in the next year or so. Unfortunately we can't retire for another 10 years but at least we'll have our home taken care of.
We plan on spending some time on another island before we arrive on the BI. We have been to all island except Lanai and Molokai, and I would like to know some of your experiences of spending time there. I have done quite a bit of lurking and know that Lanai is small and slow paced and that is ok, and we love to snorkel. That being said which island has the best snorkeling in your opinions.
Thanks in advance.
Erik

I think the best snorkeling in the state is along the Kona Kohala coast of the Big Island although there are also some good spots in Pahoa.

This might help you navigate the parks on the Big island, look at the links for the other islands. Its a big world out there for great beaches, hard to define which are the best. Check out many and you get to deceide!

If I understand your question correctly, you want to know anout Molokai and Lanai..Is that correct?

I haven't been to Molokai, but I did spent a weekend in Lanai at the Manele Bay Resort.

Lanai is a very small Island which used to grow pineapples. The pineapple farms are no longer there, but most of the workers from the farms still reside there and are now working in either of the two resorts on the island.

Lodging is expensive at either of the resorts, but they are both very beautiful. I heard that there are a few bed and breakfasts in town, but I can not confirm that.

Hello rgerman:
Yes you are correct.
I should have been a little more clear in my post, what I meant to ask was:
What island has the best snorkeling, Lanai or Molokai? I have snorkeled on all other islands including the BI and have thought all were incredible, but we want to try one of the above mentioned islands on our next trip.
Thanks again

Andrew,
You have all sorts of Hidden charms!
What other sites do you manage?

Erik,
I just assumed that since you were coming to the Big Island on this Oct. Trip that you would find the URL's that I posted helpful. Since Andrew's site is one of the best that I have seen which includes the islands.
I have not been to Lanai, nor Molokai. Those are the two islands that I still want to visit, so could not say which beaches on those islands. I thought that the guide would be helpful for you since not many folks visit those two islands as compared to all the rest, nor do I ever see many folks ever commenting on those islands on any of the Hawaiian forums for years. So I thought the best bet, is to let you know all of the options and then you get the fun and expierence of it all.

These are things that I do: When I get off the plane I ask the guy at the car rental place a question like which snorkeling beaches does he prefer after complimenting him on the great job he has done for me, then I ask the waitress at the cafe that question when I eat before heading out. The locals to the island that you are on, they usually know it best. The Andrew guides give you great direction though.

John Rabi is the only one that I can recall visiting Lanai and I don't know that he is a water kind of guy, despite the hat he sometimes wears while laying on the beach. I think he is more of a occasional sunseeker or seeker of something.

All the best Erik and report back on those islands from your's and the wife's snorkeling trip!! We all need to know! LOL

Aloha,
Lucy

Hello .E.,
Not sure where you are on the mainland but if you really like snorkeling you might head down to Cozumel when you get a chance. My favorite spot is right in front of the Coral Princess, all up and down that area is great. Chankanaub (sp?) is great for a day trip, though it takes around $10.00 to get in but there is a lot to do and see. Here in Hilo Richardson's Beach has some pretty good snorkeling, plus a real beach to hang out on. There is a huge turtle that lives there and I see it every time I go, pretty special place, IMHO. Maybe you could get certified and become a diver, that's where the real fun is in seaviewing, especially at night. Have fun and maybe I'll see you in the water!
Aloha,
PJ
