up here the trades are back.. lightly.. and the view from the cam shows the summit has some clean air again.. thankfully! and! that the vent itself appears to be way bigger in size. was there another explosion? collapse?

from this morning's hvo update...

"A small explosion at 11:08 pm ejected a few blocks up to the rim of Halema`uma`u crater, a little more than 70 m (230 ft) above the vent. By morning light, the vent appeared enlarged; the most obvious change was the removal of a lava rim that separated the vent from the crater floor. The April 9 explosion was smaller than the March 19 event. Preliminary data showed that the debris from last night's explosion differed from the March 19 debris in three important ways: 1) the size of the deposit was smaller, 2) the debris was deposited in a more southerly direction, and 3) the debris contained volcanic glass shards. Many of the ejected fragments were hot enough to melt through the plastic ash collectors."

FYI - There's a Civil Defense warning for air quality in Ka'u today.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CIVIL DEFENSE AGENCY Date: April 16, 2008
MEDIA UPDATE Time: 7:45 a.m.
Update: # 10
Incident: Emergency Health Advisory #10
This is a civil defense message.
This is an urgent health advisory for Wednesday morning, April 16, at 7:45
An emergency health advisory is being issued for the entire Hawaiian Ocean View Estates in the Ka'u District. This is for all areas above Highway 11 of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.
This emergency health advisory is being issued for the entire Hawaiian Ocean View Estates in the Ka'u District. This for all areas above Highway 11 of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.
Fire Department sulfur dioxide monitors in the Hawaiian Ocean View Subdivision read SO2 levels in the Color Code PURPLE range this morning. This would mean sulfur dioxide levels that maybe high enough to cause severe reactions those in the sensitive in groups as well as those in the general population. The safest protection against SO2 is to limit exposure as best as possible. The safest way to do this is to evacuate out of the area. Closing all windows to your home, cars and businesses can reduce SO2 level to some degree but do be careful if you choose to do this and listen to your body signs and leave if necessary
Again, due to the SO2 levels this morning in the Hawaiian Ocean View Subdivision, you are advised to leave the area if possible.
An evacuation center has been established at the Na'alehu Community Center for those needing this service.
Again, all residents of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates above Hwy 11 are advised to leave the area due to high and dangerous levels of SO2. The Color Code PURPLE is in effect for Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.
The SO2 levels are being monitored and you will be updated once more information is available.
For your added information all other areas of Ka'u are in the YELLOW Color Code at this time, which indicates only a trace of SO2.
Thank you for listening and please be safe.
This is your Hawai'i County Civil Defense .
