I need to have a fence because of the dog.I know ,chain link fence is not cheap,especially the labor.
I was told first that it's going to cost $6K.Now -$10K. So far it's just the preliminary talk with the general contractor.I don't doubt his honesty,but should I bring the material from the mainland?
On the other hand ,I remember Rob mentioned that Home Depot prices are the same in Hilo and CA.
I called the store in San Diego and found out that the materials are about $ 2 K.
I would appreciate the advice and possibly looking for someone to install the fence.

I remembered seeing a fencing topic not too long ago, and a fence contractor's name came up with glowing comments. I'm not sure what the link I put above give you, but it will at least include that topic.
You might be able to use hardware cloth instead of chain link. It should cost a lot less. In any case, definitely consult a fencing guy, not a general contractor.

Yes, the contractor was Kawika Stevens. I haven't used him yet for the fence, but he did some work for me and was super-responsible and very nice. E-mail me for more.

I don't think you mean hardware cloth. You are probably referring to "Field Fence" or "Hog Wire". They are cheaper than chain link and generally easier to install. They don't look as upscale but are common in Ag areas.

BIG vote here for Kawika Stevens. Have known him for years. He does a great job for very reasonable prices. 936-5045. Tell him Pam sent you and he will come do an estimate for free.

Thank you,guys.I understand that a general contractor is not particular a good source.But I am in the process of getting a construction loan and was hoping to include the fence.Anyway,depending on the price,I might be able to come up with the cash.The land was a cash purchase and it was not cheap.So it pretty much cleaned up my savings ..
Oink,the other type of fencing-are they secure for a 70+ pounds dog?Will they survive a vine plant?

Hog wire or field fence is plenty strong. It's used to keep cows and horses in and hogs in or out. Large animals will bust down any fence. For cows some barbed wire at the top. For dogs and hogs some barbed wire at the bottom. For horses, some electric at the top. Of course some harses or cattle discover that they can jump it. Then they have to go.

Definitely put something, there is a hog wire fence between me and my neighbor house, the dogs just find a spot a wiggle under (good thing our dogs are buddies),some of his dogs are probably 50# or so. Maybe if its placed over lava rock, or put some rocks by the base?

My photo is next to it on that page, and is just one of several I took when walking our lot in Ohia Estates. I would have been happy to have those thimbleberries, but had plenty of nasty blackberry brambles instead!
As for when to put up the fence, I'd suggest before you have any materials delivered to the lot. Just make sure there's a nice wide gate.
