Yeah, I know, lava...
Seriously, I wonder how do you find the locations of lava tubes and how thick the tops of them are. I've heard the stories of D9s "disappearing" and wonder if there's a way to map the dangers so-to-speak. Does vegetation give a clue to what lies beneath?

Got bunnies? They are one sign of a tube -- at least one big enough for a bunny to crawl through.

I have a tube big enough to walk in! It's way cool. There is actually a group that explores and maps the lava tubes on the island. I don't know their name; I only have the personal number of a person in the organization but if you are serious I can call her and get you two hooked up. I will not list her phone number here for reasons of privacy but you can email me ... pslamont@yahoo.com

I'll be back in Puna to explore our land further in March. I'll try to remember to get in touch with you just before we get back.

The group is the 'Hawaii Grotto' of the National Speliological Society (NSS). they have a sp[ring newletter with a lot of info & contact stuff at:

There are some ways to determine if there is a puka, (including using wave lengths & such) but I seem to remember that they are not always accurate, due to the different substrate compositions (again, brain is fuzzy, so this don't quote me or anything...).

In addition to that, off Road 22 on the mauka side between Paradise Dr. and Kaloli, there is an entrance to a lava tube...

I know someone that went into the cave back in the 80s. She said it was filled with human bones. I think it's fenced off now.

Carey, Russ Brauher who wrote the article on the cave, is quite a colorful character in HA. You gotta meet him if you havent! He was the president of HA for a few years in the early 2000's. He has spent a lot of time in Weldin Sheldon's portion of the cave. (Sheldon has big boy toys and finds many tubes also!)

On your own land, you can try "divining" with a forked stick, or 2 - 3' long bare copper wires with handles bent on one end for a 90degee gun like handle. Hold both about a foot apart keeping them parallel in front of you. If you cross somthing, they will cross up and get uncontrollable.(you'll know).
We used to use this method to find tubes when digging cespools, and it proved about 30% effective.

Like many "paranormal" phenomena, or superstition-based pseudo-science, dowsing for water (or lava tubes) doesn't bear up under scientific scrutiny.
Here is a paper which analyzed the most comprehensive dowsing experiments, performed in Munich in the late 1990's. According to the paper's author,
"The experiments thus can and should be considered a decisive failure by the dowsers."
Seismic detectors (echo-geology), ground-penetrating radar, and bunnies are all proven technologies for detecting holes in the ground.[8D]
