Any idea of what the coast guard was doing flying low on the coast about 6:45 PM? We could read the N#'s off our deck, it was so low. Did a boat go down? It was a overhead wing twin turbo prop.

Maybe they are still searching for that Island Hopper Airplane that hasn't been found since it took off a couple days ago.

They're still putting out hourly broadcasts on the missing plane. I've been sitting here with the scanner on since 3 p.m. and haven't heard anything else.
too soon old, too late smart
I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.

I have seen that plane go by now several times at low altitude since the search has been in effect. Actually, there have been many planes that have flown by....I am assuming to aid in the search. Late this afternoon, I saw Chopper 1 or 2 fly by and I was hoping that it was transporting survivors from the Island Hopper plane. But, the television news has not reported anything....so I guess my hopes were unfounded.

That was a c130. big orange and flew so close i could feel the heat from the backwash. they are pulling out all the stops looking for the ace of the hawaiian skies or perhaps the lost lenore....

They also said that if they don't find the missing plane by Sunday...that they will be calling off the search. I have this feeling that it went into the ocean since they have covered just about everywhere on land. And with the ocean depth off the Puna coast between 500 and 1000 feet...you would need a submersible to find the wreakage.

All the montains have trees that could eat up a small plane(from view anyway).

quote: Yes, it seems to me the fixed-wing aircraft have been unusually active in recent days. From 6th/Makuu, HPP, we see and hear lots of small plane and helicopter air traffic coming from/going to Hilo enroute Pu'u O'o and Kalapana lava viewing; including the little yellow and orange County Police. But, the last week, the small airplanes have been buzzing lots. James Weatherford, Ph.D. 15-1888 Hialoa Hawaiian Paradise Park

Yeah, in Orchidland we noticed an increase of the small airplanes in the days *before* the search for the missing plane. Any ideas what all of those planes were up to? They were just flying back and forth, and back and forth, at pretty slow speeds...
