If anything I'll be missing from the main land is Trader Joe.
One of the important item for me is my dog food.
Just looked online -crazy prices -$28,$34..
I am paying 10 bucks for this perfect quality dog food (6.6 lb).
Anyway,is there the same dog food on BI?

Trader Joe's is great. I contacted them. They have absolutely no plans to open over there. I have a very sweet little girl dalmatian that I adopted from the Humane Society. She is allergic to everything. Costco has a very high quality food with no wheat, corn or rice gluten. It sells for about $20 for a 40 lb bag. There is a Costco in Kona. Perhaps you can bring a few bags of the TJ stuff with you and transition over to another high quality dog food.

Grab an empty bag you may have of the food. Start going pet store to pet store and compare the labels to all the other products available. Don't ignore the large commercially produced dog food names as many have purchased manufactures that produce more natural and holistic dog foods. Compare the labels and at some point you will find an available product with almost identical ingredients and nutritional value for a price you can live with.

Thank you,Glen and Bob.
Priceclub,probably will do.
Glen,I was wondering if a letter with many signatures to the corporate office of Trader Joe could help.
Their "secret" for keeping low prices is that they are paying right away for their merchandise while the other have a credit pending the sale.

My golden was on canadae the 30 dollar a bag food from the pet store in kona or (cringe) ups from Oahu
We ran out.. I called a local breeder I had met and quizzed him about what he fed his 40 some documented generations of blue noses - good looking dogs.
Pedigree he said...... of all the foods Ive tried against my own bias, Mr Woof is thriving on it.... no skin issues or change over toxicity He goes toxic, smells really bad, when change to most "junk" foods
hope this helps

I know what you are talking about,Bullwinkle.
I am on a budget, but Pedigree would be somewhere at the end of my list.
Boxers are not particular healthy breed. So I am trying to keep him from a vet office as long as I could.I don't know who the storing food will work but I'll probably buy a half a year supply in Kona if I have to.
I don't think I can bring a couple of bags in my checked luggage -it will be,probably, discarded in the Airport

Whatever you do, stay away from Nutro products. Supposed to be "high end" but continuous recalls. I lost 1 of my Jack Russells to Acute renal (kidney) failure last June from their dogfood. I am currently suing them thru a Honolulu lawyer. Their are many, many complaints about them on consumeraffairs.com going back a few years! Company refuses to acknowledge there is a problem. FDA is currently investigating them.
Costco does make a good dogfood.

Called Bench & Field (they are out of IN) & there are no dealers in Hawaii
Called the ag dept at Hilo Airport & it is OK to bring dry dog food from California to Hawaii. OH about luggage, you may want to skip using real luggage & get shipping boxes that hold the most volume for the dimensions you are allowed to check... nice square boxes usually hold more volume than long narrow (ie luggage shaped) boxes.
You may even want to ship some to yourself (using the parcel post mail if you ship now, it will be in Hawaii in 4-8 weeks...- heck even priority mail flat rate boxes will save you over the internet prices). Maybe work out a supply line with a mainland friend...

I highly recomend Wysong, it's around 13.00 for an 8 lb bag of Maintenance, at Island Naturals and Abundant Life. Was recomended t o me by a holistic vet in Hawi as being the best choice for a kibble typre food. You can special order it by the case and get even more discounts from either store. That being said, I ordered, DR. Pitcairn's book "Natural Health for Dogs and Cats" and have started cooking for my dogs. It had been suggested by my vet before, but I had thought that seemed a little over the top at the time, and with two little ones running around thought, yeah right like I have the time. But I've found it's pretty easy to do by cooking in big batches and storing, and the price tag right now is what's really keeping me motivated. I can feed my dogs homecooked, almost all organic food for less than half of what I was paying for kibble. Something to think about. I had read that prior to the 70's all dogs ate home cooked meals or some form of table scraps. Kibble wasn't invented until then and since, dogs have developed all sorts of allergies, health disorders. How it was explained to me is that kibble is the equivalent of taking a box of macaroni and cheese and eating it dry. Dogs in the wild never ate like this. If you have no other time other than to provide kibble, a big help is to add some broth or water to soften it up. One of my dogs has hip dysplacia and was limping and having a hard time getting off the floor. Now he runs like a puppy. He's my real motivation.
