Made it, and it's great!

We've made it to our new home in HPP... and it's fabulous! We love the house, the landsape and the area although we're still (obviously) just touching the surface when it comes to learning about our new environment.

The Coqui frogs are a bit louder than I anticipated but it's something we're already accepting and even embracing. Compared to where we come from ( a small oceanside town in Oregon) this place is HUGE! We have many more ammenities and store options than we've had for the last few years and boy is it welcome.

I do have a couple questions if anyone is so inclined to chime in:

1.) Any public places to take dogs? (beaches, parks.. places to run in order to break the monotony?)
2.) If we choose to hire garbage service instead of taking it ourselves, does anyone have any reccomendations?
3.) We're currently in the process of looking at the different charter schools available for our new high school teen, any suggestions on which to avoid or which to actively persue?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Alright... between you and Texan Jon... where did you guys bring this heat from?

Just kidding and welcome to the neighborhood.

I'll let others chime in on your other questions and will reserve some thoughts on them since I'm getting ready to Moe Moe (sleep)[Big Grin]

Thank you very much for the advice on the schools and the dog stuff, see you Sunday Carey!

What "small oceanside" town did you move from? Cathie and I left Brookings in 2005.

We lived in Lincoln City, where we had a Safeway, some bars and lots of tourist shops. In order to get to Walmart, a video game store or clothing store, it's at least a 45 minute drive... if you can avoid the never ending one lane traffic.

There is even an outlet mall in Lincoln City, but unless you want to spend $60 on a shirt, it does no good... It had it's beauty and charm I'll admit, just wasn't my cup of tea. Did I mention how amazingly cold it was year round there?

Yep, We had Fred Meyer and a drive to Cresent City, Ca. to shop at Wally World. Cold, that too but not as cold as Lincoln City. Brookings was warm enough that the lawns had to be mowed in the winter and the nasturtiums grew all year long. Did get a few mild frosts once in awhile and the occasional snow (once in 2-3 years). Cold and windy on a good day in the morning a could hit over 100 if the wind came out of the NE. But would drop back to 60 in 30 minutes when the fog blew back in! It took me 5 years to use up a 5 gallon tank of propane on the BBQ because of the cold and most time foggy summer days. Had to replace the BBQ because it rusted out in those 5 years! 100 miles to Grants Pass, 130 to Medford (to Costco), and just over 100 to Eureka or Coos Bay. So it was at least that far to find any decent shopping. Don't miss it one bit.

PS. Welcome to Puna!

Fred Meyer was a good store to shop at until Kruger (sp?) bought them out several years ago. The quality and treatment of the employees went down hill fast.[V]
