Inaccurate reporting is one reason I wish people would exercise more care when posting links to newspaper articles. Frequently they are linking to outdated or flat out inaccurate articles which are then taken as gospel by Punaweb readers, especially those who are off island and don't know what the caliber of reporting is in our local paper. One of the downsides of the internet is that NOTHING goes away, the newspaper may or may not print a correction, but the original inaccurate information continues to bounce around cyberspace forever. I now hesitate to post on Punaweb anything positive about my school for instance, for fear that someone will immediately post links to a bunch of outdated and inaccurate articles that have been published about us in the past. This is a shame because Punaweb otherwise can be such a great resource!

I was at the meeting in question and Officer Briski definitely said, "There are only four officers between Kea'au and Kalapana." If that's what the reporter put in his story, he was reporting what we were all told. A thorough journalist checks his facts, though.
Carey, when you contacted the police, did they tell you how many officers ARE assigned to Puna? How many are on the beat vs. at a desk? I have always wanted to know that.

I believe with the additional authorization the number is 54. A dozen or so are assigned to other task not related to patrol, so figure around 40. That makes it about 6 on patrol at any given time in the Puna District.

It is too bad that this thread got to 3 pages before the correct police presence was reported.
It would be nice if the orginal posters would update the information they posted on the # of police (as an admendum to the post), so that this error is not continuously repeated ... As was mentioned by CG, these errors have a way of permeating the forum & the mindset of some....

No, 'cops' now are 'assigned' to do commando raids on gardens;
even though life and property are left unprotected by doing so.
As long as law enforcement resources are being used for anything other than protecting life and property, then those resources are NOT being used where needed most.

No offense, but you sure have a lot to learn about the local political power structure and resource allocation here on Hawaii Island. (Unless, that is, you were using that hallowed Texan tradition of sarcasm.) If only you were right, there wouldn't be a problem.
On another note, as a born and raised Texan myself, I welcome you (a bit in advance) to Puna. It's really, really different here, and I love it, despite my complaining.

Funny how so much is made about police presence in Puna protecting life and property versus garden raids and this thread has fallen back to page 5. Is it apathy or just that we realize the good ol' boy club is what it is? And we settle for that? After having read through the tread once again I don't have a clear count on how many beat police we have. I can tell you where two or three hang out almost always - Keaau - three yesterday morning as I went by all using their big boy toys (laser speed guns) catching those that bring easy revenue (you know doing that serve and protect stuff). Only here 6 days when I had the pleasure of meeting the elite force -seems 65 mph in a 45 mph is NOT ok, though I was not the lead vehicle in the parade but an easy $177.00 fine. And the fine gentleman (they guy with the badge and gun) greeted me after we pulled over with "jesus christ, why were you speeding, jesus christ!"...someone I have never been mistake for before, but guess he saw some similarity or what he just intentionally offending me?
Yeah I was wrong, mea copa, e kala mai. Now when I travel the road cruise control on 44 mph without exception every vehicle on the same path "speed" on by giving me stink eye. I just don't have another spare $177.00 folks. Driving wit aloha!
