I'd like to mention something.

When it comes to politics and reading statements... when they mention that they will listen to only 3 minutes from each person... it is very vital to get to the point.

Three minutes goes by faster than you think and it sucks when you are cut off mid-thought w/out even getting to what you state.

My suggestion when giving testimony.

State your name, where you live, whether you are for or against the PCDP, and then a simple statement that states why you are for or against it.

Politicians don't like to listen to rambling testimony.... trust me on this. [Wink]

I'd like to thank Emily in Advance for giving us this opportunity.

We are pleased to have an opportunity to discuss the important topic of amendments to the Puna Community Development Plan (PCDP) with Councilwoman Emily Naeole on July 25th in Pahoa . Now that the shock of the July 1st meeting is past and we have had time to consider Councilwoman Naeole's proposed amendments we understand that they do have value and make important corrections to the PCDP. We very much agree with her on most of the key proposals. Actually one of Planning Director Chris Yuen’s amendments provide us with the most concern.

Some of Emily's amendments concern clauses in the PCDP that were inserted by individual SC members. These personal perspectives should not have been put into the final draft. It is to Emily's credit that she spotted those anomalies.

I am not confident that sending the amendments right back to the same Steering Committee is the best route. The Implementation Phase of the PCDP, which starts the minute the council passes the PCDP into law, launches a new effort called the Action Committee. This group will also be appointed by the mayor but we do expect to see new faces there and, hopefully, more diversity such as Councilwoman Naeole promotes.

The July 25th Pahoa meeting will, we expect, provide a reasonable measure of communication so the only real point of departure now between the District 5 office and Friends of Puna's Future is timing.

The timing is important because there is a real chance that if the Final Draft gets jammed up at the Steering Committee level again or if even more amendments are proposed along the way, that this plan will fail to pass this council. That would be a real tragedy and disservice to Puna.

When Councilwoman Naeole’s worthwhile amendments come before the Action Committee we look forward to being there in support.

I am bumping this up because it is important and timely and got buried when someone dredged up a whole bunch of threads from last winter.

I think it is important for people to attend this meeting in Pahoa Friday, July 25th. Especially if you know you can't make it to the July 30th Rally for the Plan!! in Hilo at 7 am.

The issue of growth, development, health care, parks, preservation of land and sea and much, much more are absolutely vital to the future of Puna.

Much more important than the current price of gas.

Will you come?

FoPF is looking for a volunteer or two to hand out some flyers and information to people as they arrive at the meeting.

It should only involve about 45 minutes before and during the early part of the meeting.

Anyone?

What an excellent meeting.

I didn't get a chance to speak in favor of Bill 318.

They cut the testimony right at 7:55 and I thought from the beginning of the meeting that we would all have an opportunity. I had plenty of opportunity.... I just chose to let others speak before me.

Candidates there, Anthony Marzi, Gale Gumapac, Steve Sparks, Fred Blas and Of course Auntie Emily...(Did I miss anyone?)

And since Hunter Bishop is so great at quoting everyone... here's a quote that I caught from him outside the meeting about 7:30....[Big Grin]

"I was hoping to see some fireworks...." [:p]

Dang nabbit... someone was wearing a Texas Longhorn Baseball hat and I walked right up to him and tapped him on the shoulder and said....

"Jon"?

He turned around and said...sorry...not me!

*edit*

I'd also like to thank Auntie Emily for coming, and especially to her Legislative Assistance Tiffany Edwards.

Tiffany - Not only did you show up... you kept us on track, you took notes, and you fed your beautiful daughter. I'm so glad you didn't decide to step-down as her aide when you were hapai.[Wink]

Rob Tucker -

Great Airplane analogy, it would be great if you could repeat it here on PW for those that didn't attend the meeting.
